Senator Byrd's racist past....and present...

Byrd Hails White Supremacist as 'My Mentor'

Senate Grand Kleagle Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., is defending his decision to honor a once prominent white supremacist politician by naming the Senate's primary office building after him, calling the notorious racist "my mentor."

Byrd, a former Ku Klux Klansman, had cosponsored the legislation that named the Richard Russell Senate Office Building after the long dead Georgia Democrat 31-years ago.

"He was kind of my mentor," Byrd said recently, noting that Sen. Russell was known as an expert on Senate rules, much like himself.

or

This interesting tidbit....

"And in a 1947 letter, after Mr. Byrd had been elected to the state senate, he wrote that he would "never submit to fight beneath that banner (the American flag) with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

A bit about Byrd and the Klan

The whole lot of racists should be routed from the system, including Byrd.

But let's stick back to the topic shall after all, it is Charles Pickering that's being pushed for as a juidicial appointee by Bush.

Ooooooh no....he switched political parties as a form of protest against the civil rights movement. My oh my yes that is equivalent to being in the KKK and making comments like....

Only last year Mr. Byrd told Fox News that "There are white awesome people. I've seen a lot of white awesome people in my time, if you want to use that word. But we all -- we all -- we just need to work together to make our country a better country and I -- I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."

What has Pickering done in the last ten years that makes him a racist? How about the last 20?

Is there anything more recent than almost 40 years ago?

If you actually read the article you'll see here that Pickering did alot more than switch political parties...

Instead of "trying to establish better race relations" in the 1960s, Pickering worked to support segregation, attack civil rights advocates who sought to end Jim Crow, and back those who opposed national civil rights legislation, above all the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. Or, in the words of a public statement he signed in 1967, Pickering wanted to preserve "our southern way of life," and he bitterly blamed civil rights workers for stirring up "turmoil and racial hatred" in the South.

He try to undermine the whole civil rights movement! Dont get me wrong I hate racists like Bryd too, but he came clean about his past, renounce some of his views while Pickering constantly mislead everyone about his past.

Byrd came clean? Came clean? Do you mean that in a sense of coming clean by repeatedly saying the same racist crap over and over again? So Pickering worked against the civil rights movement. A lot of people did back then. So what? Find me a picture of him in a KKK getup or holding a gas can at a cross burning and then I'll put him on the same level as Byrd.

Racists are racists, whether republican or democrat.

If you somehow feel that Byrd's racist past need to brought up, feel free to do so in your own thread.

My original question was why did Bush chatise Lott for his racists views, yet is pushing for a bigger bigot as a juidicial apointee?

A bigger bigot? Just how do you know that

1. He is a bigot
2. That Trent Lott is a bigot
3. Assuming that 1 and 2 can be proven to be true then how is he a bigger bigot?

He was involved in the anti-civil rights movement 40 years ago. You know what? A whole helluva a lot of people were against it....especially in the South. So should we kick anyone that was involved in a legitimate legal fashion against the civil rights movement out of their jobs or keep them from getting a job? You have to understand the culture at the time...especially the culture of the South. Hell...why stop at 40 years ago....why don't we deny jobs to anyone who had an ancestor who at any time owned a slave or who fought on the side of the Confederacy? Dredging up crap that happened 40 years ago is ludicrous. Look at what a person has done with the latter part of their life...have they changed or do they still show signs of being bigoted somehow? People grow and change. When you look at what Pickering did back then it was understandable given the times. Belonging to the KKK would have been a different story...as would continuing to spout off racist remarks while you are a U.S. Senator. If you really want to dig up dirt from the past and cost people their jobs over it then let?s talk about Ted Kennedy. I'm pretty sure that being a felon is reason for denying someone a position as a Senator.

from your article

-- also confirm, in more detail than ever before, that Pickering became a Republican in 1964 to protest the national Democratic Party's support for civil rights and its attacks on segregation --

Odd way to protest the democratic party since more republicans voted for civil rights laws than democrats. This is true at least at the federal level.

Ok
Many national and internation sources. Would you like a listing of the articles I have read as well?

My guess is the republican party was looking for a reason to get rid of Lott as he is considered a weak leader by many.

No need, I was trying to make the point that objectivism in writing is a myth, there is no unbiased news where humans are involved.

Odd way to protest the democratic party since more republicans voted for civil rights laws than democrats. This is true at least at the federal level.

Once again someone is trying to imply the GOP which voted FOR the civil rights legislation is the same membership hosting Thurmond and Lott. In the 19th century, blacks were overwelmingly Republican . . . Party of Lincoln. As Democrats systematically denied the rights of blacks to vote, Republicans largely abandoned minority membership as dead weight. Regardless, throughout much of the South during the first half of the 20th century the only real party was the Democratic Party. Hence, racist Democrats covered the spectrum from Thurmond to Byrd.

Once the DEMOCRATIC president announced universal civil rights was an immutable element of the party platform . . . upstanding Democrats such as Pickering and Thurmond left the jackass party to join the Grand Ol' Peckerwoods. In essence, the South throughout the civil rights era was solidly DEMOCRATIC but a majority of its racists elements left the party for the more hospitable whiteness of the GOP. Old dogs like Byrd decided not to change his spots . . . so if he was going to stay racist he might as well stay a Democrat as well.

Here's the answer I'm sure you want to hear....

It's because Bush is a racist. He is a racist on a scale not seen on the national political level since David Duke. He only appointed Colin Powell, Rod Paige, Norman Mineta, & Mel Martinez to cabinet level positions because he needed a few tokens. Same is true with Condoleezza Rice. He only appointed her National Security Advisor because he needed the black vote. I mean never mind that the woman is a genius, she's just there to play the Aunt Jemima role. In reality she does nothing more than bring the white men in the White House their coffee and strudel.

The stalling of judicial nominations by the Left is a horrible miscarriage on our system of government. I have not seen such truly traitorous actions by a political party since......
