in the market for a grill under $250...

still deciding between the convenience of gas versus the taste of charcoal cooked steaks....

haven't really seen any decent dual charcoal/gas grills in my range (decent ones seem to start around $500)...

your input is appreciated...

one last thing, are the side burners very useful on the gas grills???

charcoal all the way.

Also do NOT buy the cheap charcoal. go with real stuff. it cost a little more but well worth it. Kingsford is good in a pinch though.

I have both....

Ill use the charcoal grill on lazy weekends when time isnt of the essence. For weeknights or "rush dinners" then obviously its much easier to quick turn on the gas than wait 45mins for the coals to get hot enough.

So I cant do your poll. :)

battle of the BBQ.....gas vs charcoal! gregshin 12/27/2002
If I cough up the dough for a decent cut of meat, it's gonna get charcoal grilled, no two ways about it. I pile it in a corner, use a propane torch to start it (takes about two minutes and no kerosine smell), wait 45 minutes (usually set the table or go online at this point), then have at it. No big deal. My gas grill is rusting away, because I won't use it. I thought it might be nice for winter time grilling, but I still use charcoal even then!

Maybe if I hit the lottery (kinda tuff to do, since I don't play), I'll snag one of those spiffy Kamado grills, but I'll be using it with charcoal 98% of the time!
My useless gas grill has been thrown away since that post on 12/27/2002. It will NOT be replaced!

Charcoal for everything. Heck, we do our thanksgiving turkey on a Weber Charcoal grill.

meh, its already been decided in tastes tests.

gas for fast cook meats (read steaks)

charchol for slow cook meats (lamb, chicken, pork, ribs, etc)

What I'm really saying is if you have a 1.5" steak and you need more than 3 minutes a side your grill just isn't hot enough.

I cook my steaks (butcher cuts them 1.5 inch, two for a filet) at 600 degress at about two minutes per side, equals medium rare.

Both because sometimes you want grilled food but don't have the time for charcoal.

kingsford is chopped, formed, and pressed sh!t. if it doesn't look like it was real wood at one point it ain't right.

Gas grill + smoker box = happy medium between the taste of charcoal and the convenience of gas.
Actually, my parents have an electric grill and use a smoker box. It's great.

I'm happy with my gas grill. Most of the flavor comes from the smoke of the drippings anyway. The stuff I cook tastes great.

I had a small webber for years, and was happy with it. But I think the stuff cooked on the gas grill tastes better.
