Character Map issue?

Ellos all, I was refereed to this site by a friend (don't know his account name here). I am hoping this is the right forum to ask this and that someone will be able to help me.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit and as of late, it started on MSN Live when i was typing; my keyboard characters changed on me. ~ was # and / was ^^ and ? turned to É, all the characters aside from letters changed to something else without me doing anything.

I closed MSN completely and everything went back to normal. But last night my FireFox did the same thing, had to close it to correct the problem, and has happen yet again!

While having this issue, I can type fine in other programs, it seems to only effect select program at select time.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated,

Don't think so because it works fine on everything but the select program when i have the issue.

Scans from AVG 9, Spybot, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and Ad-Aware all come back clean. Why i don't think it a virus is that its not all the time, only 3 times on different programs and does not effect every program while im having problems. Its to much work for someone to make a virus be intermittent and picky like this, then to just flat out change everything and attack me right?

maybe the author for the virus is trying, but it's not working properly? 😀 Try your another scan with kaspersky av trial? What were the 3 different apps you were using when this happened?

i had Microsoft Security Essentials scan as well and found nothing

Man I had this exact same thing happen to me a couple years ago and I cannot remember the fix. I may have even resorted to an OS reinstall.

For now I guess you could try adding an alternate keyboard layout in the Regional and Language settings, remove your normal US English layout, then reboot and add it back in? Might fix things.


Alternatively you may already have an alternate keyboard layout added in which case 'left alt+shift' cycles between them, which is program specific - may be what you're encountering. But I don't know of a layout that replaces / with ^^


If I remember how I fixed it I'll let you know. It wasn't a virus or bad keyboard though.. maybe it'll come to me 🙂
