Character display question

Hi,
(i think this is the right place for this question, if not could somone move it to the right place?)
I was thinking about getting one of those display things that fit into a 5.25 bay to show information about my computer temps, the time, what music im playing etc. Im pretty sure they all could do that . Anyone know any particualry good models and brands? I want something easy to install and very customizable as to whats going to be displayed. Im looking at the Matrix Orbits, vlsystem, and crystalfontz but i cant seem to be able to find information about them or pick one.

Thanks!

I've never used one, but do know a bit about them; I was considering buying one about a year ago and did some research.

Just as important as the display itself is the software that runs it. You want to ensure that the software can do everything that you want it to.

They used to use a serial interface, but most of them are now USB. They connect internally, typically, but sometimes the USB cable must be run outside the case and plugged into a USB port. The better devices will come with an adapter to convert the USB plug to the 9-pin plug that attaches directly to an available header on the motherboard.

The thing that turned me off about them was all the wiring involved. If you want to control fans with them, all fans must be wired to the control unit itself. Same for temperature probes. When I was looking at them, they all had temp probes that had to be ran to different spots on the case. I.E. CPU heatsink, northbridge heatsink, hard drive case, etc. Too much trouble for me.

But, they sure are pretty to look at.

I have used a matrix orbital character display. I loved their documentation and support forums...both were very well done!
