So I'm gonna be vacating my house in a couple of weeks and either selling it or renting it until the market recovers. In either case, I'll need to do something about my mail. I've been here 5 years now so I'm getting a lot of junk mail. When you move, does the junk mail follow your utility accounts or something?

I always wonder because of the credit card applications, car insurance applications, etc... (though they have decreased in the past 6 months)

I'm going to the post office this week to set up the forwarding, but I won't know my new permanent address until probably mid-Fall or even January. I guess I'll just log every piece of legit mail I get and try to contact the companies to update my info?

If you have had to do this and have any advice on the best way to handle this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks,

Why don't you just get a PO box, and have the mail forwarded there till you know where you'll be.

I have always just transferred my mail to my parent's address during "rough" times that I didn't have a semi-permanent place to live. I used to get a lot of "Friends at [insert address here]" type junk mail, and those kinds do not follow you to your new address. For CC applications, you can opt out of them, I think they all have contact information to delete you from being pre-screened.

Good luck with the move.

You can set up forwarding online, FYI. It's good for a year.

Get a PO Box if you're not going to have a permanent address for a while. Just realize that you can't receive Fedex/UPS with one.

Your junk mail is generally not forwarded. I believe only first class mail is forwarded, so bulk rate, etc will not follow you unless sent directly. I've forwarded twice, and in my experience, the things you want follow you.

This is the best way to do it. I did the same thing when I moved.

Awesome. Thanks for the info.

Tiamat, the reason I won't have a permanent address is because I'm moving in with my parents until I can get a place. They're awesome and helped me out a bunch this weekend by taking a Uhaul trailer with my bar and kitchen stuff. All I kept was what's in the fridge and a bottle of scotch. ;)

I went away to college 11 years ago....was in school long enough they offered me a job. Now I'm switching from one university job to another to be closer to home. My wife starts work this Fall so hopefully we'll be able to find a house somewhere close to our respective jobs once she figures out where she'll be (hopefully a mile from my job). It's a very exciting time....but uncertain too. :p
