Changing XP Pro OEM Key

So I'm in the process of moving to a new PC and I'd like to move my current hard drive over intact so I don't have to reinstall all my stuff onto a new PC. As my current install is on an OEM copy of Windows XP Pro, I know that it is considered illegal to use it on a different system (i.e.: different mobo) and I'd like to know how to change the current key to the new key without reinstalling Windows. Also, do I need to deactivate the old copy first before changing the key?

There are several key changers out there, even one from Microsoft.
The real question you should be asking about is....will the XP install work on the new PC hardware?

same chipset?
same video card?
same type of hard drive?
same type of CPU?

To do it all legally, safely, and without reinstalling your software, do a repair installation on the new system. Move the HDD, boot from your original Windows install CD, do NOT select the first repair option but go to the Install part of Windows installation and then select to repair your existing installation.
You'd need to reinstall any Windows Updates later than your original install media.

As long as the motherboard uses a chipset from the same manufacturer as the previous computer, you should be okay. Just do a repair install of Windows once the drive is moved. If you want, use the same product key from the old machine, as long as you do not plan on ever using the old computer again. In other words, this will be the only system on use with that product key. When you have to call in the Microsoft for activation, you can explain your situation in full detail, and they will allow you to reactivate it. They've actually recently switched to an automated system, and just keep hitting the number one in response to each question.
