Changing winmodem ports

Can someone give me a hand with this. Have a U.S Robotics
56K PCI voice modem which insists that Win 98 install it
on comport 5, IRQ 3. Is there a way to force installation
on com 2? This Dell computer has no physical com 2.
Thanks,
Dabney

Why do you wanna change COM ports? Is it more or less an IRQ problem that your having?
Not uncommon for winmodems to be set to COM5, had a few that installed that way, never a problem.

Why do you want to change this #? The COMx number is only there for compatibility reasons, only OLD applications will still use this number to "access" your modem.

Windows itself and pretty much any newer app that uses modems does so through Windows' RAS APIs. In fact, earlier versions of Rockwell's (now Conextant) winmodem drivers didn't even assign the modem a COM number.... The modem still worked fine however, just not in DOS or with old Windows 3.1 applications.

Winmodem drivers almost always setup the modem on Com5 or higher for one simple reason, to stay out of the way of devices that need to be assigned one of the standard COM numbers of 1 through 4.

Thank you all! I want to put the modem on com 2
because I have a communications program that will
not function otherwise. This modem was on Com 2
until windows apparently decided it should be moved.
morkinva, I'll give your suggestion a try.

If your modem's drivers don't have an option to change this, it probably isn't going to happen, but I could be wrong. My old modem, for example, installed a little control panel that would let me choose which COM port to assign it to.
