Changing Windows XP User Name

I used to have a different name but I changed it to KaiserBasara on windows. But under C:\Documents and Settings\name it has my old name. How can I change it to KaiserBasara?

My windows xp name is KaiserBasara

Log in as an admin other than your current account.

In system properties, advanced tab, user profiles settings button do a "copy to" to copy your old account over to the new location.

"Log in as an admin other than your current account. "

I am the admin. I don't have any user names except KaiserBasara (this one)

"In system properties, advanced tab, user profiles settings button do a "copy to" to copy your old account over to the new location."

Copy To is grayed out because the only location on there is the User Name i'm using now

"YOu just need to delete/rename/move the old profile, log out, log back in, and it should show the new name. "

There's valuable settings on KaiserBasara. If I delete KaiserBasara, all the settings will be gone

I don't know what I'm gonna do

What he means is that you have to use the Master Admin Account
which is built into Windows XP ... you can not make changes to
your own user account when you are the user logged in ... You must
be Logged Off in order to make the changes

There is in fact a Hidden Administrator Account in Windows XP ... It does not
show up in User Accounts ... Get yourself a copy of Proactive Windows Security Explorer
(now known as Proactive System Password Recovery) from this URL below:

http://www.elcomsoft.com/pspr.html

It may tell you which accounts are on the system in it's trial mode, but you will
need a license key if you want it to try and actually get the passwords for the accounts

If you would do this....

Make a new admin account to log in with for the copy.

I would almost guarantee that if you are unaware of a master admin account, it has no password. In the control panel, under user accounts, go to change the way users log in. Do not use the welcome screen. Log off, backspace out your name type "administrator" and hit ok.. try that to log in to master admin account.

I logged off, typed administrator, and hit enter (I dont have a password) and then it said I can't go in because of a restriction

I can use both my old name and KaiserBasara to log in through the classic. I don't need a password

And after I do get into administrator, what am I gonna do? Can I really seamlessly rename? My account was renamed to KaiserBasara, but I want it to say KaiserBasara in documents and settings

Just make a NEW account, give it Administrator rights, switch to that account, THEN try what the previous poster said about copying your profile.

I made a new acount called KaiserBasara, logged in, did clicked my old user name, did Copy To VALKYRIE\KaiserBasara I realized there were a bunch of files in My Videos that might copy and that would take a long time, and eat up all the space on my hard drive. So I closed it out hoping nothing got screwed up. I rebooted, deleted KaiserBasara, made KaiserBasara again, logged on to KaiserBasara, and moved all my videos to KaiserBasara's documents in a folder called videos (there was no My Videos for some reason). Then I did Copy To VALKYRIE\KaiserBasara and it finished in a couple minutes.

I rebooted, logged in to KaiserBasara again, and the settings looked the same. The wallpaper was the same, and there was only a recycle bin on the desktop. It looks like that copy to stuff didn't do anything

Even if it did work, it wouldn't be seamless. For instance, all the application data in My documents wouldn't carry over and wouldnt be totally re-registered. There would also be a lot of files from the old account that would have to be carried over. It would be a real pain.

So I don't know what I'm gonna do.

Then continue to use the windows under the current name.... the name really doesn't mean anything. It seems like you won't be happy with any of the results.

JHC.

You cannot be logged on as the account you are copying to OR the account you are copying from. The account your are logged on as to perform the copy must be an admin.

This really isn't that difficult.

WEll, it took awhile to copy when I was logged on one of those accounts

So if I did this copying on admin would I be happyp with the results? Something tells me copying everything then deleting the old name would be catostrophic

Because whenever I start fresh with a new user name, it takes a month to get everything comftorably in. It's like breaking in new shoes

System REstores are also very catostrophic. Whenever something goes wrong and I ask emachines or best buy for help, they say "Do a system restore". Never helps

no, you will be fine, what you are doing is "migrating" your files over to a new account,

while youre in the admin account (not your own) go to my computer > explore > Local disk c: > documents and settings and on the panel on the left side of the screen you should see all of the files of the different users that are located in the system.

find your "old" account right click all the files, or drag the files to the "new" account and you should be set to go.

**important** do NOT delete taht account until you are sure you have everything that you wanted to save.

login to your "new" account to make sure you didn't miss anything..

if you have a cdrw it might be a good idea for you to burn any important files to cd's that way you don't lose valuable info incase of some catastrophic event.
