Changing video hertz

I have a Samsung 700 IFT monitor that handles high refresg rates. I am running winxp at 1020 /768 with the refresh set at 100mhz. Now the problem. I had to send in the monitor for service and as the computer was turned off I just unplugged the monitor and took it to the shop. When I hooked up an old viewsonic that I have, once winxp boots to the profile log in screen the screen is black because the Viewsonic cannot handle the high refresh rate. How the heck do I change the monitor settings in win xp so that I can use the Viewsonic till the Samsung is back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Boot into safemode (press F8 before it starts to boot into windows) and change the refresh/resolution to a value you know it does support (800X600@60hz should do it) Then reboot, now once into windows..change it to what you want.
 
😉 Yep. other solutions are to use the Boot Menu in WinXP to boot in to 'VGA mode', or to edit system.ini in C:\Windows directory, change the entry which is something like 'DisplayVGAFallback=0' to =1, the setting is obvious in the file and it will do no harm if you get it wrong. You can edit this by booting in to DOS (DOS prompt only from Boot Menu) or via a floppy boot disk.
 
Thanks guys. I was hitting the f8 key to early and getting the boot from option menu. Although I could not change the refresh rate in safe mode I was able to reinstall the video drivers and that took care of the problem. Thanks again for the help.
