Changing Universal Constants and the Age of Magic

The recent article about some "universal constants" actually changing with time has caused me to think about the "Age of Magic".

When I watch movies like "Excalibur", characters like Merlin would sometimes say lines like, "The Age of Magic is dimming, to be replaced by the Age of Science"....

Wouldn't it be cool if in the past, magic was real? A possible explanation would be that there is some currently unknown universal constant that allows "magic" to exist. Maybe it's a constant governing the strength of a new type of force -- "mental energy force" or something like that.

This "mental energy force" is basically similar to mental telekinetics (sp?) -- the ability to move things with the power of the mind or mental telepathy (the ability to read minds). Surely, in the past, if confronted by individuals with such abilities, we would attribute this as "magic".

Now, to allow "magic" to exist, the unknown universal constant would be something like 1.0. Perhaps it was this value in the past. But as time progressed, the constant changed to something like 1.01 which made the Age of Magic fade away -- to be replaced by the Age of Science.
