Changing timing belt a little early...

Ok, so my 05 Legacy GT's belt is supposed to be replaced at 105k. I have 92k now and 13k away from the first timing belt service. I don't drive the car super fast...

ok?

I would recommend one of these sooner than later. A friend of mine lost the engine in his '05 due to a failed oil pickup.

Yep. We pulled mine at 109k and it was still okay, but I'm installing a new one anyway (it wouldn't fit with my OEM pan..apparently I have an 03 leftover, so I have a Killer B pan to go on at some point). Better safe than sorry..worth the few hundred bucks to avoid needing a shortblock (or more).

Any particular reason you want to change it early? Water pump die?

why not. a timing belt snapping is a VERY VERY costly problem. If you have the time/money do it now for another safe 100k. Most roll the dice and go maybe 10-20k over and are still fine but again a timing belt job is anywhere from $300-1000. A new/used head is about $1000 + the timing belt job and possibly R/I a damage piston or 2

Two heads on a Subaru, so likely even more expensive (plus you can't just pop 'em off without much hassle).

IIRC the Australian service interval is 60k..and it's the same motor, which is interesting. It definitely won't hurt to change it early. Mine was late..I did it at 105,001 miles. 😛

A timing belt replacement is not just milage. It is milage or age, which ever comes first. Same as coolant or many other things.
Check the owner manual as many are 6-8 years or XYZ milage.

I think your is 8 years OR 105k

jlee: so Did you replace your oil pick-up tube with the killerB unit? I'll have to talk to the mechanic...

I tried but it wouldn't clear with my oil pan (apparently there's an issue with some 04 Forester pans)...talked to Chris at Killer B and I ended up buying one of theirs. You should be okay with your OEM pan, though. You can buy the pickup from Killer B directly, or at a significantly reduced cost from Fred Beans.

i would check water pump too. mite as well service the water pump too if you're going to do thet-belt.

Agreed.., I would replace the water pump while you're in there. It runs off the timing belt so when you replace one, you might as well do the other. I replaced the water pump, timing belt, and idler pulleys when I did mine.

Yep, 105 months (8.75 years) or 105k miles.

I'm always of the belief that a little extra TLC is worth it if you want to depend on your vehicle for the long haul. Sh*t can and will still break, but it's better to do maintenance 10% early than 10% late 😀
