Changing stock cooler

I have a reference 660ti, blower style of course.

I'm wondering if I would get lower temps if I were to remove the shroud and attach a 120mm fan onto the heatsink directly.

I was going to remove the shroud and just have a 120mm pointed at the heatsink.

It will have the potential for lower noise levels but forget about better temps. The high speed directional airflow guided by the shroud will cool much better.
