Changing RC freq. from 27mz?

G'day guys.

My mates and I just bought 3 cheap little RC cars for $20 each since it's raining, and anyway, they are all the same, and all use 27mz frequency. I was wondering if it was easily possible (quickly) to change them to 3 different frequencies, so we aren't controlling each other's cars...

Probably not with the cheapo ones, unless you have a background in radio frequency electronics.

It probably wouldn't be hard to change the controller's crystal, but may be a little harder to change the reciever's listening frequency...

If it's a crystal, you could do it easily, but if it's a coil of wire.. you'd need to figure out how to wind a new one for the new frequency.

Like Eli said, most really cheap RCs don't have a changeable crystal. What model RC did you buy? The only ones I'm aware of that come with a transmitter with a changeable crystal are the Kyosho Mini-Zs; however, it's been a while since I've looked into that. Also, the Mini-Z cars are more than $20, so you probably don't have those.

This is what a crystal would look like. The one in the link is 72MHz, which I believe is used for planes. 27MHz and 75MHz are used for cars, I think. I believe one of mine is 26.995MHz and the other is 75.4xxMHz. Note that even if you can replace a crystal, you have to stay within that frequency range. So you can't put a 75MHz crystal into a 27MHz transmitter or receiver. Also note that there are only 6 frequencies at 27MHz and about 20 or so for 75MHz.
