Changing Processor Possibly

My current compy build is the following:

- intel q6600 G0
- xfx 8800gt 512mb
- 4gb crucial ballistix ddr2 800

I was thinking about maybe buying a new, fast dual core like a 3.0+ghz. I play a lot of games but I feel like a dual core would do more justice graphic-wise since most games don't even utilize quad core yet.

I was thinking about getting the dual core soon and selling my q6600 before it drops in value more (currently selling on ebay for around $170-190).

Would this be a decent idea or are more intel dual cores coming out soon that I should wait for? I've been out of the hardware loop for awhile =]

Thanks

What motherboard are you using? If it's capable of overclocking I agree with Mark. 3.0 GHz should be doable without too much trouble at all, and then you're not giving up much to a dual core. A Q6600 shouldn't have much trouble handling any game anyway. What are you playing that's slowing down?

It would be a waste of OC oppertunity on your G0 Q6600 when you would switch Dualcore. You can get away with 3.0-3.2Ghz for games easily, especially with your 8800 G92 GTS, unless you are looking into playing your games @ beyond 1600x1200 resolution.

Save your money for a nice Core i7 upgrade somewhere next year instead ;)

I have a gigabyte P35-DS4 motherboard. I know they can OC dual/quads like a champ but I have no idea how to OC :( I've read a bunch of tutorials back in the day but I don't want to mess anything in BIOS up.

The thing is, you can't really mess anything in the BIOS up, well nothing that can't be fixed by shorting a jumper or removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes. That's all you have to do if it doesn't boot. And once you've done that, the BIOS will load its default settings once more, enabling you to boot again.

I would try and read up on the overclocking once more, because if you are smart enough to contemplate replacing the chip, you are smart enough to learn something that really isn't that difficult. I agree with everyone else, save your coin.

3Ghz should be cake with that board and chip.

Yeah I built the computer. I know I can figure it out it's just like trial and error and I'm lazy and don't feel like reading stuff to figure it out haha.

School + girlfriend + family + work = no time to learn how to OC. lol

I'll get around to it but thanks for everyones advice.

p.s. are there any specifically good readings on cpu OCing? I have a zalman CNPS on there with arctic silver so its pretty much ready to get OCd, I just never bothered learning how.

Well the bottom line is you could save yourself some dollar for a little work.

There's a sticky at the top of the CPU forum, that should contain all you need.

Read that, clock up that chip and then take out your girlfriend for a slap up meal with the cash you just saved

:D

I would have to agree with the above comments. Save you money and OC that Q6600. It can get to 3Ghz with minimal adjustments to bios. As "mancunian" has suggested, read up on the OC sticky and from that info you should reach that goal. :)

Then you'll want to buy either one of these, or one of these. You'll still get alot less performance than those of us who overclock, but at least you'll still be lazy. Oh, and broke.;)
