My school's network tech guy is a complete idiot and in trying to protect eveyone has shut of certain ports. I can't hardly play Pokerstars or UT2004. I was told that if I went in and "changed" the port information in the programs themselve I could fix this. However nobody told me how. Can anyone help?

Why is he an idiot if he has stopped you from playing games? Some colleges want to accomplish that.

I never implied that he wanted to stop us from playing games

and why should anyone do that... what right do they have to say that even though I pay $28,000 to go here they don't think I should play a perfectly legal online game? Any school that tried to do that to me would find out it would be a bad idea:).

Uh, because it is their network? Just guessing there since they do own it and they may very well want to limit their bandwidth to educational applications.

And making inferred threats against your school's network and/or administrators isn't going to garner you much sypmathy or help from this forum.

Good luck, there's no way they will open those ports back up to you. The bandwidth is supposed to be use for education purposes, not gaming or p2p, etc.

No offense but this is about the coldest reception I've ever faced on here... I NEVER SAID they wanted to stop online gaming... only that for security reasons they shut down certain ports that happened to effect UT and Pokerstars.

I don't need a lecture I was only asking for help.

No offense to you but it's the truth. Asking to get around a port that is turned off is what you are hinting at and that is not something to discuss on the forums. I'm a student living in the dorms and I know what it is like. If you want help with a game setting, go to a forum for that particular game and ask there if it possible to change which port it uses to make it more playeable.

Alright fine, I will do that... For future posters though, just because you're behind you're computer screen it doesn't give you a reason to be cold. Friendly forums are what made Anandtech a sucess. No need to assume anything for the sake of it.

People skills go a long way

Yes they do as you post this in a forum full of network admins and then proceed to threaten them with...

Any school that tried to do that to me would find out it would be a bad idea:).

OK... they would find out it would be a bad idea because I am the senior president and wouldn't stand for it. My classmates have complained and it is my job to change this issue. This guy here is a complete idiot, our network is down half the time simply because he doesn't understand the way our updated network really works. Half the CS majors here know it and can't stand it either. The simple fact is he's been working here for 20 years but hasn't kept up w/ his stuff. Not to mention that on the few occasions that he is actually working, he is a complete a$$.

Sorry if I "insulted" some people but I never grouped network admins as idiots... only this one.
