I have 4 doors I want to switch out the locks for. 3 of them I'd like to also have a deadbolt that uses the same key. I looked at Lowes but they only have single or duel lock sets.

So do I need to order these? From where? Or should I just call a locksmith?

Buy them at Lowes/Home Depot and have their locksmith key all of the locks to the same key. I believe they charge an extra $5 per lock.

This. At my store, as long as you have the time, it's on the house.

Thirded. It's easy.

If you just want to rekey the existing locks then have a locksmith out. I will say don't cheap out if you buy new locks. The builder grade stuff is super cheap.

When I got mine, I matched the numbers on the back of the packages to get most of them, then I had one more that I had Lowes re-key. As long as you take it to them before you leave the store, it's free. Don't expect it to be immediate though. When I moved in I had 4 or 5 keys to operate all the locks. Now I just have one :)

Edit:
When I worked it out, if I brought all the locks into a locksmith, I'd have had to pay $8 more to have them re-keyed than I paid to replace them all.

You can go to a locksmith and they can just change the core for you. No need to change the lock.

Nah, I really need to replace all the locks/knobs. They're some kind of non-standard locks and deadbolts, and aren't consistent in all the doors.

Which is better - Lowes or Home Depots?

Probably doesn't matter. And yes, it's $5 per lock that you need to have "keyed"

you should have purchased the smartkey deadbolt/key set over at home depot. you can match your old key to the new lock with a small tool that comes with the set.

In those trays of locks at the store, look at the locksets. Most of the reputable brands will list a key number on the package. It is a small sticker on the packaging. Schlage for instance sells their locks in retail flats of 6 where 3 of the six come with one key the same and the other 3 are the same. Same goes for most brands. Just because they are not all enclosed in the same packaging does not mean they have differnt keys.

The retailer also has a re-key kit for changing any of the others to match the ones you have. Most will do this for free with the purchase of the locksets. If you were bringing your own in off the street you may see a fee.

Lowes does it for free.
