Changing my IP

Hey guys, I have been recieving attacks from an unknown source on my computer but it is getting really bad lately. I want to know how to change my IP, my MAC address, everything. I am willing to even buy a new router to stop these attacks. Please help me I am using Comcast Cable and a Linksys Wireless router which I am connected to through an ethernet cable and my onboard ethernet card. Basically I need to make it so that my internet connection is totally new and untraceable by this hacker.. PLEASE HELP!

under the setup tab, click the mac address clone, check the box for enable and put in any appropriate value there.
reboot the modem and router.

Changing that MAC is the same as buying a new router.

If you're concerned about security, why are you using wireless?

You cannot change the MAC address of your network adapter. It is written into the hardware. You would need a new NIC.
Your IP is assigned to you by the DHCP. It is dynamic, but may not change. Call your ISP and ask to change it.

Changing everything won't help if there's some secret badness running on your comp. Scan the crap out of EVERYTHING with some good software. I like Norton's.

i thought the MAC was hardwired into the NIC, WinXP detects a change and "needs" to be re-registered.

It is written on a rom on the nic, but there are plenty of ways to change it. Hell, I can even change the MAC on my Mac.

NIC = Network Interface Card. Your ethernet plug, built into the mobo, or PCI for less than 50 smackers.

ROFL. Changing MAC addresses isn't very hard. It's very *easy* and possible to change the address of your network adapter. As everyone else said, ask your ISP to change your IP address or switch ISPs. You could also set up a very solid Linuz firewall to block a range of IPs that your attacker is coming from.

The only way to prevent attacks is to disconnect from the internet. NAT's and software firewalls can block them otherwise.

To the OP:

Don't be so silly. IF (and that's a big IF), you are TRULY being tracked, then whoever is doing it will find you again.

The best advice is simply not to worry about it and get over it. Your firewall etc is up to date? Good. Sleep well tonight.

My firewall and IDS logs are full to brimming and that's just with the passing script kiddies with their pissy scanners. This is what being on the internet is like so you might as well just get used to it.

If you think you are being specifically targettted by a particular individual, go to the cops, or complain to his ISP.

Probably read the Router log and saw the WAN's Cable Internet noisy pings. They usually labled with an IP that is used by the ISP.

I get between 800-1200 packets dropped and logged on my linux IPTables based firewall. I only allow ports 80, 21, and a high end port for SSH in.
