Hi,
I am thinking about buying a NEW Motherboard which will accept everything on my present Motherboard - can someone please tell me IF I switch mobos like this do I HAVE to re-install my OS and everything? OR after switching components over to NEW one and running whatever CDROM that might come with the new mobo - should it run w/o any problems?

What chipset are you moving from and to? What operating system are you using?

Depending on your answers it CAN be done. I would never recommend it though. Do a clean install.

I am running W' XP SP1 Home Edition on an MSI NForce Mobo - would be upgrading to one of the new NForce2 Mobos - BUT - I do NOT want to have to re-install and update ALL of the things I have accumulated over the past year.

I just read the other day in the OS forum I think, somebody went from intel chipset to via without reinstall. Supposedly went very smoothly. It could have been in the motherboard forum also.

Give it a shot. It has a pretty good chance of working. At least backup your system state and make a repair disk though. Your registry is getting ready to be butchered pretty badly.

You'll know based on stability how the move went.

In the Win98 registry there is a section in the registry under Current_Hardware called Enum. If you delete all entries under that heading, you can get a successful mobo swap. Be sure to back up your registry files before doing the mobo swap - in case it doesn't work, you can go home again... I don't know for sure if that method will work under XP.

THANKS everyone for input - will be a little while, BUT do believe I'll give it a TRY, after backing up, as advised. Anyway, when and if I end up doing it I will report back here to share the results.
