I am changing from an Biostar M7VKQ which is a VIA KLE133 chipset with windows XP running, I am upgrading to a Shuttle AK32E motherboard. I need to know if I can just put in the motherboard/CPU/memory and hook up the old hard drive and will it work properly or will I have to reinstall XP or do a total fresh install? Thanks in advance

This gets asked often in both General Hardware and Operating Systems so a search might turn up useful information.

When I upgraded from a KT133 Mobo to a NForce2 Mobo XP didn't like it and kept rebooting at the XP splash screen but all I had to to was boot with the XP CD-Rom and choose repair previous installation.

sometimes you can just startup and go. Sometimes you need a XP repair or clean install/format

Actually, what works best is to pick the new installation option, then when you select the partition to install on, it will find the original installation and ask you to press "R" if you want to repair it. This tends to work better when moving from one HAL to another, as the initial repair option often does not work properly.

From VIA chipset to VIA chipset you might be lucky, and do without reinstall. The major stumbling block is the IDE drivers - if your new mainboard uses a different IDE chip, then Windows XP wants new drivers, doesn't have them, and thus doesn't even boot far enough to let you install suitable ones. And you can't do this in advance either.
From KLE133 to KT266 or higher is quite a jump in chipset age though, so this may or may not work. Best you can do is install the very latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers BEFORE doing the swap.

I don't think that's the way to go - I'd REMOVE all via drivers before the move. then when Winblows attempts to load drivers for the newer hardware (including the IDE drivers), you can let it search the CD that comes with the m/b.

Well I gotta give ti a try and hope for the best cause the Biostar M7VKQ VIA KLE133 motherboard dies so now I have no choice, hopefully the Shuttle AK32E VIA KT266A will just install fine, if not, then I will try the repair option with XP and if that still dont work, then I guess its a fresh install on a differnt hard drive and I will have to copy over what I really, really needed to.

Thanks for the help.
