Changing "marker" lights on 88 Celebrity

Does anyone know how ideally a person changes the "marker" lights on a 88 Chevy Celebrity? They're on either side of my headlights in the front, jammed in a very awkward position (just so you can kind of scrape your hands into the place to get to them, but not twist them out and change them). Do I have to take out the headlights to get to them (and how would I do that-- is there just one screw holding it in?), or is there some sort of funny reach-in-and-twist gizmo I can use instead?

The oil change place wanted $13 each to change them.. they're both burned out...

OK first, open the glove compartment. Inside, there should be something called an "Owner's Manual". This will explain how to change the bulbs.

If you don't have a manual, then I can't help specifically. However, you should not have to take the headlights out as the parking lights (marker lights are on fenders, near the back of the wheel well) should be able to be removed separately from the headlights.

since were on the topic of changing lights...anyone know how to change the headlights in a 92 civic without ending up in the hospital? Every time I try to change them I get some serious cuts on my arm and hand (Its extremely tight space-wise, but there's got to be an easy way to do it.)

Other than wearing long sleeves and gloves, I can't think of a way offhand. Ever had to change the bulbs in retractible headlights in a car where the lights go down as soon as you turn off the ignition? Those are fun. Unplug bulb from wiring harness with lights folded down (off). Start car and turn lights "on". Pull headlight motor fuse out of fusebox so as not to have your hand accidentally crushed if the lights retract. Turn off car. Remove sealed-beam bulbs from the sockets. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. It's not that hard, but it's a royal pain because of all the extra stuff. Also, if you replace the fuse with car off and the lights up, sometimes this reverses the lights. (ie, switch "on", lights on but retracted, switch off, lights off but up).

Hey, that will come in handy for the GF's 89 prelude. 🙂 thanks!

Might this mystery gizmo be called a pliers?

'92 Civic? Good luck! I have a '92 Civic and I agree, it is tight.

What happened to the switch next to the rear defroster button that raises them? It might make your life easier. (I bet you're talking about the Porsche, aren't you?)

Hondas have a switch that raises the lights and keeps them up regardless of whether the ignition or headlight switch is on. It's much easier to use than all that fuse pulling f**kery.

I just thought of something:

The 88 Celeb has flush headlights (replaceable bulb type), right? The lens is usually not designed to to be removed for normal maintenance, and if you do, you'll screw up the adjustment of the beam and need to re-aim them, not really fun if you don't need to do it.

Look between the headlight and the parking light lens. You might see a screw head or two at an angle that might do the trick.

Start looking for screw heads. It might also have some kind of spring clip that holds the parking light lens in place. Look for a plastic finger sized loop attached to a spring.

Ultimately, keep looking around. It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. You should not need to remove the headlight.

Yes, the 914 would be the problem child. My Accord (1988, the gen. w/ retractible lights) is very nice and simple about changing the headlights because of that nice switch. It would not be so bad if the Porsche did not retract the damn things as soon as you turn it off. If it left them up even with shutting off the bulbs off it would be easier. Of course I could manually crank the lights up, but that's even more of a pain.

That's what it was.. duh.. now I'll have to re-aim my left headlight, since I *duh* seemed to think the aiming adjustment was going to make the headlight pop out 🙂 I'm guessing since my other light is still aligned more or less right (I think), I can probably just measure the distance between headlights and aim the left the same as the right with that distance between.
