Changing Jobs: The Transition

Any advice you all can give on the transition? I've been at the same job for over seven years and a week from Monday, will be starting a new job in a completely different environment. I've got some anxiety about what to expect in the switch. Considering I'm the 3rd most senior person here, I'll be the new guy again...

I'm excited but at the same time nervous... so anything you perpetual job changers can tell would be appreciated.

Is it a centralized IT department at the university? Or does each school do their own thing?

I went from a small company to a big one a few years ago. The hardest adjustment for me was realizing that I was hired to do ONE job instead of having to wear a bunch of different hats.

For the most part its centralized but there are other departments. The way it basically works is that people come to us if they need certain things done and we bill them.

Yeah, I'm wearing a ton of hats right now... but I believe they hired me thanks to my skills all over. I do know I'll have a focused position though, which you're right... it may be tough.

Get used to terf wars. I work for a large university now, and people are very protective. I hear it's even worse at more prestigious universities.

I do web development at a decent size college. There are multiple divisions of technology groups on campus but for web we really don't have to deal with the others.

I doubt it'll be as bad as working for a large company, but expect to run into a lot of red tape, meaning everything is done by committee, and projects can grind to a halt if you don't adhear to the correct policies and procedures.
