changing from Ati Radeon 32mb DDR to Voodoo5 5500, considered a down grade?

If you have seen my previous posts about my Radeon Ive been having nothing but problems because of my system. Just like the others with a KA7 motherboard. Some stated that they are running fine but I still seem to be having difficulty. This card has some pretty 2d/3d but Games just dont run as smooth as Id like them to. So i am thinking about returning my card to outpost.com and purchasing a v5. Good idea or bad idea?

also i was wondering what the differnce was between an OEM v5 and retail? I dont really care for software that comes in the retail package as long as the cards are identical in terms of speed.

Go for it. The Voodoo 5 5500 with LOD set to high detail (or something like that) looks really amazing. Performance wise, it will be a bit slower but all games today play fairly smooth with it. At 800x600 and 1024x768, you should be fine. I don't think there is any difference between OEM and retail in this case.

Yup... ill share with you what i have done.

Reformatted, installed Win me.
installed the latest 4in1 via drivers
entered registry settings
change bios settings ie agp driving control, etc
flashed my bios to TY revision

I ran out of ideas and I dont think its worth my hassle.. dont get me wrong it probably is a great card but its just not working for me.

I am pretty sure there is no difference between OEM and retail. If you don't like the card, email me. I will buy it from you. I kind of want to have one as a momento but I don't have a system that really needs a faster card. They all have fairly fast cards except for my sisters and I don't want to buy one for her since she just uses it for chatting with friends on AIM.

well I was planning on returning it because I bought it from outpost.com for 169$ thinking that there was a 50$ rebate. (turns out the rebate was for another card) unless your willing to pay for that price range I dont think youd wanna buy it.

Too bad. You're the first person we couldn't help. Good luck with your next card.

I was referring to the 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500. If you aren't happy with the Voodoo 5 5500, I would be willing to buy it (at a fair price). I really don't want another ATI card for a very long time.

I returned a Voodoo 5 5500 for a Radeon 32 DDR. I now consider that a big mistake. Right now, I have my old overclocked MX in my machine and the Radeon sitting on a shelf. It didn't quite work out for me either. Here's my computer:

TBird 700 Slot A
K7 Pro (Irongate)
320MB RAM
Windows ME/Mandrake 7.2 dualboot

You've been around these forums enough to know the answers you will get. Everyone has their favorites. I would say this: The V5, GF2 and Radeon are all very good cards. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Its a shame you cant get the Radeon working properly in your system, but that's the way things go sometimes. I've setup 4 PC's with them and each was a piece of cake. These were all Intel systems though (3 815E and 1 BX). Anyhow, many people are very happy with the V5 cards, and I don't doubt that you would be as well. The GF2 is also an option you should consider. Good luck with whatever you wind up with.

I have a voodoo5, read all the review hype so i went got a ati radeon 32mb ddr, had it my system for a month tweaked updated drivers the whole works, well i put my V5 back in and don't see any reason to go back to the radeon. The radeon is a nice card, it was very stable crash wise, it never locked up or crashed once in my pc for a game that would load that is, but it had plenty of problems, a few older games wouldn't play and more games had graphics issues, more in 32 bit than 16 which seems odd. considering speed 16 bit and 32 bit, graphics quality 16 bit and 32 bit, real usable options like fsaa, glide, T and L(well I'm not sure about real world T and l), stablity , compatablity, problem issues etc I come to the conclusing the voodoo5 is a better allround card than the radeon for gaming.

I don't consider it a downgrade. There is no difference between the retail and OEM V5, AFAIK. The Voodoo5 is a great card, don't worry. Benchmarks tout the Radeon is being a little faster, but if you read here on the forums, most people who switched from one to the other prefered the V5.
