Changing CPU...What to expect?

O.K....Newbie at this....upgrading from Duron to Athlon 1 G. AXIA on KT7-R mobo. I know how to set the multiplier.

Never changed a cpu before so don't know what to expect. Will mobo auto detect the new cpu or do I need to manually do something?

Have been told to go to BIOS that will support higher FSB. Do I need to do this before or after the switch?

Thanks,
Jeff

The mobo should recognize the cpu without a problem so long as the bios will recognize a tbird...which I am sure the K7T-R..should...becareful applying the HSF do not apply pressure direct on the HS while pushing the clip down....needle nose plies are a big help

Should be ok.

Just to add to neath's post, when pushing the CPU into the Socket, dont apply too much force. Let it drop in if you can.

You should be fine otherwise :) Let us know how it goes.

Abit BIOS

You're correct about using new BIOS that will support 133FSB, however you can only do this with K7TA series.

You'll have to buy 1GHz or 1.33GHz Athlon with 200MHz FSB if you have a K7T without the final A.

HMMMM.......I thought I had seen a bios available for the KT7 with high FSB support.

Anybody else familiar with this?

Thanks,

Check to c if ur CPU is 1000/133 FSB. Check the L1 bridges...locked ? If locked, unlocked it using the pencil trick. Then :-

1. Update to latest bios.
2. Boot w/ Duron still in.
3. Go to bios, oad default.
4. Save & reboot.
5. Shutdown
6. Put in the new CPU.
7. Fire it up.
8. Go to bios & adjust the preference setting.
9. Save & reboot.
10. Done.

If ur PC didn't fire up in step 7. Clear the CMOS & try again.

If ur CPU is 133 FSB, it will boot up as 750 Mhz. Go to bios change the multiplier to 10.0 (only if u unlocked the CPU earlier). Save & reboot.

Ur mobo is a KT133 chipset mobo. It rarely go beyond 110 FSB.

You will have no effect's to data on your hardrive. Except maybe now it will access it faster.:)
