Changing CPU fan

Hi,

After several years I cannot take it anymore and I want to replace my noisy CPU fan. I don't need it to be super quiet but something average or better.

I had a couple simple questions I hope you can help me with.

1) Do I need to change just the fan or heatsink as well?
2) My motherboard is a P4 socket 478, 400 Mhz... which model of fan should I be buying?

Your help is much appreciated!

- Jay

Sorry...

It is a P4 1.7 Ghz. System bus is 400 Mhz.

I've looked at some posts and some have recommended the Zalman CNPS7700-AICu. Will this one fit? It looks like it'll chew up the cords surrounding it. Any other recommendations?

actually, since it's 60mm, you can by a 80mm to 60mm reducer, and then a 80mm quiet fan.(60mm quiet might not be powerful enough).

or, if you want ultra quiet, get a 60-80mm reducer. 80-120mm reducer then, a ultra quiet 120mm fan.
edit: example:
stock heatsink,
60-80 mm reducer(13.50)
80-120mm reducer(13.00)
120mm fan(16.00)
total: 42.50
pricey, but will cool the hell out of it, and you can attach it to your next computer, no matter the socket or model.
prices from 1coolpc.com
you can find lower prices for these things, but 1 cool pc has some AWESOME service!

Is that a prescott core, and do you OC (or plan to OC)?
Here is a cheap, pretty quiet solution.

lol a 1.7ghz prescott? its probably an old wiliamette core. and does jay talk like he knows what ocing is?

is the fan removable? if it is not, you will need to buy a heasink w/ fan. if the fan is removable, you can just buy a low rpm 80mm fan, such as a panaflo at jab-tech.com.

Wadded Beef is correct... I don't know what OCing is and I don't have a clue what type of P4 I have.

Would simply changing the fan make my computer quieter? I believe I can remove the fan because its screwed into the heatsink.

Thanks for all your help.

if it's screwed on, it's removble. changing the fan to 120mm will make it whisper silent.(if you buy the right fan of course.) ther is a 20db model somewhere for not too much money. of course, as you switch fan sizes, you'll need the 60-800mm converters and 80-120mm convertors to mount them.
it is queiter because a 120mm fan can push the same or even an increased amount of air at lower rpms.

Fan adapters are junk, don't mess with them. The Zalman 7000ALCu would be a good choice, the 7700 isn't necessary and just plain too big to recommend.

P.S. there is a "cases & cooling" forum dedicated to questions like this.
