Changing BIOS?

Well, I've heard about changing the BIOS on desktop PCs where the mobos are very similar. But I've been comtemplating it for my laptop.

I've got a Gateway M305CRV. It gives me almost no options whatsoever in the BIOS, so I'm wondering what I can get out of another BIOS. Gateway themselves have stopped doing BIOS updates for this model (it's been over a year since they released one), so I can't expect much from them.

I was wondering, if I found another laptop with the same board and chipset, what are the odds of getting the BIOS to work on my notebook? How dangerous is it? Has anyone done it before?

Thanks.

It is conceivable, in theory, that such an attempt might work; but I'd be quite nervous about trying. The BIOS substitution for desktop boards tends to work in cases where an OEM board is a thinly covered rebadge of a known retail board. Since there are pretty much no retail laptop boards, BIOS images are not commonly available. If your laptop were one of the common rebadge ones(e.g. some of those Sager/Clevo setups) you could probably use a BIOS released by the OEM, or any of the rebadgers; but with yours, I don't know of any such source.

A bad BIOS flash can brick your machine, more or less irrecoverably. If you don't have strong reasons to try, I'd hold off.
