changing around my home setup?

M = Modem
R = Router
S = Switch

As of now I have my modem and router downstairs in a box that has all the network connections to the entire house.

I want to move my modem and router upstairs and leave a switch in this box instead. It should improve my wifi signal and give me me more ports.

I just want to make sure this will work before I go out and buy a switch.

That's pretty similar to the layout I have, except all of my PCs are hooked up to the standalone switch, because it's a gigabit switch, and the router is only a 10/100 switch. My switch is DLink 8-port, my router is a Linksys with wifi and a 4 port switch.

The only place that could potentially be a problem is the length of the ethernet cable between the router and switch. But unless your cable is anywhere near 100 meters (328 feet, basically a football field), you should be fine.

But why do you hook up your "phone" to the switch? And why does "PC 2" have a yellow line?

Finally, you may want to consider the 8-port version, in case you want to hook up more stuff to your standalone switch in the future. In your layout, you'd only have 1 gigabit port left.

my router is gigabit, so I figured I should get a gigabit switch as well.

the length isn't long enough to worry, it goes from downstairs to upstairs.

phone is some voice ip phone, i hate it.. wasn't my choice to get it

PC 2 is actually a microcell because I have no service at home on my cellphone.

I know you don't need the same manufactures, may be for OCD reasons..
