Changing an air filter?

I don't get what you're trying to dispel. It's a fact that K&N flows more dirt. It's a fact that dirt is bad for an engine. It's a fact that the job of an air filter is to filter air.

You are trying to argue that the letting in 45 times as much dirt doesn't harm the engine, but really the only thing you can say for a fact is that in your particular location, in your truck, your motor oil (which itself runs through a filter) has normal levels of impurities with a K&N filter.

If anything you should be trying to dispel the common misconception that K&N is universally better than paper filters, when in reality the only thing it's good at is lowering restriction, which has no net benefit except at WOT, and is actually much much much worse at filtering.

Buy a Ford with a Cummins diesel, run a K&N, and when your engine dies, try to get it serviced by Ford. After they tell you the warranty was voided by running a K&N, you can go back and read the terms, and then kick yourself in the butt repeatedly.

On the subject of engine air filters, I read a story last month that said with all the computer controlled sensors on cars today that a dirty air filter will not reduce the gas mileage on a fuel injected engine. The air/fuel ratio will be kept the same even with a slightly restricted air intake. Not sure what to believe.

I am not disagreeing with any of this. There's obviously some permissible level of dirt because no filter blocks 100%. I'm suggesting that the amount of dirt a K&N passes might be within the permissible level.

Yes, to me the oil analysis that suggests no problems means A LOT more than some lab test by somebody I don't know or trust. If you look at the universal average you'll see I'm still below that. I'm going to guess there are data points used to obtain that average that are above it and were obtained with a paper filter. Just a guess, I can't prove it.


Oil analysis from my wife's car
This would be the only other point of comparison I have. It's my wife's car that is completely different from my truck but for this discussion it has used a paper filter for it's entire life of nearly 65000 miles (less at the time the analysis was done obviously). It gets driven in the same environment as my truck.

I never claimed it was universally better nor do I agree that is the case.

Yea and no. It does not void the warranty just because it is there. Now if it comes apart and/or damages something directly then yes any damge due to its failure will not be covered. Same can be said of any other paper filter as well.

Yea and no. It does not void the warranty just because it is there. Now if it comes apart and/or damages something directly then yes any damge due to its failure will not be covered. Same can be said of any other paper filter as well.

Read that whole thread. They can void it because Cummins tested and found that K&N lets more dirt in... it's not about the filter coming apart.
 
I change my filter when it gets dirty. And that can vary a whole bunch, depending on if you drive on dirt roads or not. You need to look at your filter at least once a month.

The honest answer is, when it gets dirty. There is no set mileage when this happens. Depends on where you are driving the vehicle, really.
