Oh man... I can't get the metal base secured back on the wall. There's too many wires and too much insulation in the way to get it on... I think I'll just make the maintenance guy do it.

I'm no electrician, but I'm guessing that exposed wires with no wirenuts is a bad thing. When I first moved in, the wired smoke detector wasn't working. The repair guy who opened it up to fix the wiring was amazed at how messed up it was.
