Either way, it's a good move for Intel I think. They are far too tied to CPUs and traditional computer systems to allow them to expand much more, even without the huge pressure from AMD. By rebranding along these lines, it let's them expand into other electronics a bit easier.
They tried going sideways once before when they made the push into server farms...unfortunately that didn't pan out very well for them. Neither did their attempt at being a graphics card company...though they are still the largest manufacturer of graphics. But Intel have a lot of money and a whole bunch of very talented people...the key will be if management can finally end their losing streak (they've made a ton of bad decisions over the past 6-7 years...).

Its a recognition that the big strides in the CPU business is about over.

The game of building a faster processer every 18 months doesn't work anymore.

So where is the money going to come from ?? Certainly not from upgrades.
The upgrade business is about over for most of the regular business community.

Home computers for doing the web, word processing and kidde games don't need any more juice to do the job. In the business world, a PIV doesn't type a letter faster than a PII. The computer age has reached maturity but the techie hype won't admit it. Is there really any technological "breakthrough" that we are waiting for in huge anticipation ??
Duh..the XBox 360 ??

The upgrade game is over for most of us and Intel realizes it .....
And so its looking for a new playing field.

AGREE with bendixG15 in both hands UP

Read the answer on this thread what should i get ?

Techno has reached to SATURABILITY in the last 3 years.

It's big mistake (including me) when you update every 6 months for guessing it will run faster. But the fact is NOT true.

For example, you setup winxp on pentium 3 or last X2 or Pentium D without drivers, you won't see any improv. over speed, not like in the past under upgrade path.

Speed is not DOUBLE, but the price is TRIPLE or MORE. I really don't get it. Besides, the quality is getting worse.

Don't let they run business from your little poor pocket.

This is maybe the last chance I will update my system. And I'm lucky sticking out with X2 now. It's nice that it still perform faster than D9* new Intel CPU>

Put your money to other than ugly computer components these days.

Well, I disagree with bendixG15.

I suppose I could say just sit back and watch. But I would like to point out that the perception that performance&capacity have been standing still the last years is not true. It's mostly true about CPUs. But just briefly consider the huge strides made by graphic cards. Chip sets too have improved. And interfaces and harddrives, not to mention optical storage.

As for CPUs, the current slow progress will not continue. If Intel are planning for that scenario, they are facing continued years of humiliation (which I think they will face anyway ;) ). 64-bit memory models and thread models that divide work are going to really open up things in computing. That itself will open the door to new applications which in turn will continue to drive the spiral.

But maybe Intel should look for new playing field. Might be a good decision to get out of the CPU business.

I think the push is really going to move from speed to efficiency, both in terms of processing and power usage. This can already be seen in the whole argument over performance-per-watt and intel incorporating shorter pipelines into their cpu architecture. The biggest strides will come from true innovation and, sadly enough, nimble marketing. Should be interesting.

WTF M8??? Intel still has approx. 80% market share=OEMs are still buying plenty, then selling products containing them. Dell is still Intc's Rock of Gibraltar for dominating market share.

As to the linked blurb, just pick a axiom, don't put all your eggs in one basket, strength through diversity, ect. Intc understands that by seeking out more markets, and creating new ones, you can increase revenues.

Then there is "convergence", the home entertainment center and PC will continue to merge, and the mobile and wireless sectors will continue to grow. There will continue to be new oportunities for companies to exploit, and new ones to create, for companies that strategize well.

Intc is still in a very strong position, and IMHO, can use their "5th most popular brand in the world" status to excellent avantage in new market spaces.

Just read today that the Pentium brand will get phased out (that's the 5th most popular
brand name in thw world) to be replaced with Viiv for home PCs.

Nonsense, Intel is the 5th most popular brand and Intel Inside has been the sticker for 14yrs*being replaced by Leap Ahead*. IIRC the number 1 selling Intel CPU is traditionally Celeron, not Pentium.
