so...

i own a cooler master igreen 500w power supply, it was running good for 1 month till i started to hear screeching noise from the power supply fan. i found it really annoyed so i decided to fix a new 12cm fan and i happen to found out that the fan plug on the power supply is only 2 pin head, anyway i put in the new 3 pin fan into it.

it works, but i wasnt sure if that fine to run 3 pin fan on 2 pin head, no knowledge on that at all

any suggestion will be appreciated,

thanks in advance!

kind regards,

Only one of those wires provides power to the fan, the second is the ground, and the third is for speed monitoring. As long as it spins when the psu is operating, it's fine.

thanks alot myocadia, just one more thing, i checked the official website, it mentioned that the fan is auto adjusting so i assumed it will spin up when its necessary, so does it do with voltage increase from the power supply or the fan itself with built in smart control?

I believe the PSU itself monitors the temp and adjusts the voltage accordingly. The fan will always spin no matter what the temp is the PSU just adjusts the speed of the fan. As mentioned above the 3rd (yellow wire) on the fan is for monitoring RPMs. So the PSU will be fine with the new fan. Replacing PSU fans is a fairly common practice.

Purely out of curiosity, why did you not RMA the PSU? You voided the warranty by opening the case.

yeah i did thought about that before, but..

1)RMA took weeks in here, i need the comp to do rendering everyday and i dont have a spare power supply

2)i have so much of lights and fans with wires that i totally forget how to put them back to the right connections again

3)with above two combined,i just dont have the time to do that now :(

i never have problem with coolermaster power, so well... i pray this time is the same :)
