Hi
I have 2 laptops of HP. model is hp550 business notebook.

I want to interchange the mac addresses of both the systems with each other. Laptop "a" should have both LAN card and wireless card's physical addresses of laptop "b". I need it to be permanent, so i really dont see any use of some software to change mac address for some time and also we have to do it every time we reboot system.

  • Is it possible if i change the NIC cards of both the systems, means hardware change which includes both the cards?
  • Can these nic cards be changed without changing other hardware?
  • Will there be any issue regrding performance or hardware compatibility?

Please note that both the laptops are same model purchased same day. These are old one about 3 years old. One is absolutely new and other one is completely f* up. So i need to change mac ids due to some problem with wifi connectivity. No other way else than changing mac add is possible.

Also if you can please tell me where these cards are located, any image or video or any graphic illustration etc. I have opened laptop several time for changing touch pad and keypads and ram.

It can be done with software, but you are only band-aiding a problem with the network itself (where ever it may be) if you cannot connect with another machine containing a different MAC.

What is the problem with the current laptop?

Or an even more relevant question...what is being done that is so dependent on a device having a specific MAC address?

Sounds like some system they have implemented has a major design flaw.

if theyre exactly the same system it might be easier to just swap hard drives between the two units.

Swapping the drives wouldn't help with the mac addresses, they are burned into the nic itself. Swapping the nics out is about the easiest way to do it.

I mentioned that softwares are not good option for me. But thanks for your reply very much.

You know this is the most silly thing people do over forums. I asked a question and if someone want to reply than please reply to help the person in problem. But why few people turn it to a court room and try to change world on forums. Does it matter to anyone why I need to change this or that. My question was not this. people should stop being social police over forums sitting on there chair at homes.
Sorry but I wanted to say that but thanks for taking time to investigate the issue.

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01627018/c01627018.pdf

There's the service manual. Take a browse through the removal and replacments procedures to find out if your WLAN module can be exchanged.

There is no permanent way to change your MAC on your notebook, other than exchanging the module itself.

What is the problem with the current laptop?

nd the problem with laptop is that My brother got laptop from college and I also bough same laptop same day bcoz i liked it. His laptop is totally f**ked up but mine is like new so he is going to change with me and to access his wifi at his campus he need mac id to match and to connect to lan in his hostel room he needs mac add to match. So we gonna change it with mine. Otherwise he wont be able to connect and his college need students to go through a long procedure to fill forms and applications and explain them why what when bcoz he got it free to use in college and after degree he will have give it back.

Thanks once again for link

If you want help, then you have to be prepared to answer questions from people that are in a position to help you out. On a daily basis, technicians are bombarded with questions that are irrelevant to the actual problem at hand. Asking questions is the simplest way to cut through to the actual issue, and get you the help that you need.
