Change Natural Hairstyle or Get Expelled, School Tells 12-Year-Old Girl

A 12-year-old girl will be expelled from a Florida school unless she gets her hair under control, school officials have told her. Vanessa VanDyke, an honors student and violinist at the Faith Christian Academy in Orlando, tells WKMG that administrators have given her one week to decide whether to cut and shape her hair or leave the school, which she has attended since the third grade.

The school’s handbook includes a section on hair that says it “must be a natural color and must not be a distraction,” stating examples that include mohawks, shaved designs and rat tails.

VanDyke wears her hair in a natural African-American style, which she says she won’t change.

In September, a 7-year-old Oklahoma girl was forced to switch schools after administrators at Deborah Brown Community School, a charter school, wouldn’t let her keep her dreadlocked hair.

Parents complained that her classmate were teasing her over her hair.

She notes that fellow students have recently been teasing her about her hairstyle and it has only become an issue with the school since her family logged complaints about those incidents.

Rules state: “must be a natural color and must not be a distraction”

I guess the school deemed her hair style was a distraction (which is within their rights) as the other children were teasing the girl due to her hair style.

I know there will be the usual "private school" arguments going around but this girl is wearing her hair as she is born with it.

so should I be allowed to not take a shower ever and go to school that way? I mean...I was born with that stink. Its my natural smell.

Go find something else to get excited about. Isn't time to buy some vinegar or something?

The school must be racist. All the more reason to fire every single administrator and revoke the massive pensions of every retired administrator in that district.

yeah i would hate to have to sit behind her.

Not me. I love sleeping in class, and that would help hide me lol.

I hate to say this, but the parents brought this upon themselves. It probably wouldn't be an issue if the kids and parents worked it out themselves (or taught the kid how to handle being teased) rather than complain to the school about it.

My son has a good friend at his school that has his hair like this. It is really freaky.

In a conservative society of long haired freaks, a girl with short hair would be seen as an anathema.

You think that having an unusual hair style is the same thing as having poor hygiene?

My only problem with her hair is that it's mo longer the 80's

Same.

Outside of that, yeah, it's ridiculous, but it's a private religious school. I'm not really expecting anything that is accepting of anything but their norm.

Good lord can you even bother to read the article hell the OP even mentions it is a private school. But go ahead rage on about public school employee pensions.
