MS can do all they want cuz you agreed to the EULA. and they keep updating that knowing nobody ever reads it.

That's the point that everybody should pay attention to. It really is the truth. Anti piracy isn't stop anyone - it just makes things more complication for legitimate consumers.

Closed windows and door locks won't stop a car thief from stealing your car either, so why bother with those when all they do is complicate things for consumers (how often do people misplace their keys?)?

What they do do is stop the casual thief from stealing the CD's out of your car of whatever else you have in it. Most anti-piracy methods are not designed to stop the "professional" crackers, they're designed to stop the average Joe from giving all their friends and family members a copy of the software they just got.

thants wrong. breaking a car lock takes skill. downloading a cracked version from bittorrent does not.

Software doesn't crack itself, someone has to have the skill to crack it first. I bet there are far more people who know how to throw a brick through your car window than know how to use bittorrent. The average computer user doesn't have a clue what bittorrent is, so having any type of mildly complicated copy protection will stop a significant portion of casual copying as well as cut down on corporate piracy.

Good point, and I've yet to have XP flip into activation mode for a memory change.

If you're a 'Nazi' for requiring your software be registered I guess that makes IBM 'Satan worshippers' for the licensing hassles they put me through for their platforms.

Oops, I forgot. Only Microsoft is evil for charging for their software.

Ever dealt with Checkpoint and their licenses? :)

Sooner than you think OS's will reside on servers in Redmond and we'll pay monthly access fees, just like cable TV.

I hope your being sarcastic.
Most people would stop using windows.
And what about computers with no internet?

But come on all you do is call them up and you can even SPEAK the code into the phone.
EASY!!!

Here is what to do -

1) purchase a copy of Windows XP Professional - FULL RETAIL
2) search for a legal copy of the corporate version with a corporate CD key (don't ask me how, don't ask me where, and don't ask me why)

3) you are good to GO (crunchwrap supreme!!)

4) you are protected through EULA~ (you're not in the light zone, but you're not quite in the black zone, because you did pay for the OS) ~ Let's just say you are in the grey area with a little bit more sunlight..

Zero:

Nope. Bill's selling it right now. Corporations have all their windows administration done on a central server. What...no, why do you think dot net is?

Peps don't have cable...Peps don't have internet...It's a tough world!

Bill's not going to continue giving up billions for much longer. And when he gets enough content, we'll want to pay.

First it was satalite, then the telecos, then cable, heck even the gas and electric utilities looked at supplying content through their wires and pipes.

Once Bill's 75 or so billion cash gets enough content, we're all dead!
And his 5000 programmers are NOT trying to make windows faster for you, they're trying to make money for Bill. As soon as he kills Google we'll look back on click/advertising revenue generation as "quaint".

Look how the recording companies got blindsided. The same thing is going to happen to the intermet "industry".

Whooooaaaa! Way, way off topic!

Call them up and tell what you did. The Indian will ask if you have that copy of xp on more than one computer and say no and they will give you a new installation id. Simple enough?
