This afternoon Chrysler Group and its parts division Mopar unveiled its newest concept vehicle, the Dodge Challenger SS, and a revived a trio of crate engines to mark the 50th anniversary of the classic 392 Hemi at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association trade show in Las Vegas.

The Challenger SS, which stands for Super Stock, is the second concept version of the legendary muscle car -- first revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit early this year. Chrysler Group plans to have 2008 production models ready in early 2008.

The 392 Hemi crate engines, which are powerplants customers can order through Mopar and install in their garage, out power even the biggest production Hemi in vehicles now. (The 6.1-liter Hemi creates 425-horsepower.) The carbureted 392 will crank out 540 horsepower and 490-feet-pounds of torque. The fuel-injected version will push 525-horses and 510-foot-pounds of torque.

"The 392 Hemi is a legend so rich in automotive tradition that hundreds, if not thousands, of books and accounts have been written about its historical significance," said Chris Cortez, senior vice president--Global Service & Parts, Chrysler Group in a press release.

Wow, that is truly amazing. I think that car may be the best looking "retro" car out there. Definitely one awesome looking ride.

Peace

Yay! Finally - a two door Challenger. This is probably the result of everybody everywhere expressing dismay about the 4 door version.

EDIT: the picture with that article makes it look kind of like a nitro funny car.

me? yea i just splooged, drooled, and did some other things... oh and a few tears of joy just dripped out of my eyes a moment ago
a Challenger SS is exactly what I want, and will get... hell the Patriotic theme would be something I'd get me thinks.. might go alongside the H1 that I really want to get, but sadly the only modern H1 being sold is the H1 Alpha that costs roughly $140k :( gotta find a used one that probably costs close to the same, a collector's item now, surprisingly.
either way, a Challenger SS with the 392 in it... holy hell

Wow, that's hideous!!! That big ugly hood scoop, the god aweful paintjob...I give it a huge

If they could tone it down a bit with a less obnoxious hood and a reasonable paintjob it wouldn't look so ridiculous. As it is, it looks like a clown car...fit for GWB on suck up to the dumbass voters day.

obviously they aren't promoting that as a paintjob, much like the Ford GT hideous light-blue paintjob with a big number on the side...
its simply a promo, and the patriotic theme, maybe seem obnoxious to some, but its simply something to do for large-scale anniversaries, ESPECIALLY ones that revolve around american muscle.
oh and, not sure i'd want to own that paintjob, but I certainly do appreciate it.
and the hood? it's kind of a drag-racing thing, i mean.. look at the tires. its obviously designed to be a dragracing machine, especially after throwing in a 392. (not saying the tires would come stock, but they want that impression from the get-go)

So, what kind of fuel economy are we talking here? 10 mpg?

Who cares?

It isn't a production car its just a promo car. The paint job and everything else about it is made to look like one of their drag cars from the 60s-70s. The crate engines they are talking about in the article are meant for people to buy and stick into other cars hence the carb version.

The carbed engine is a crate engine you install yourself. No way you will pass emissions with that. I would assume it's for those that want to build a race-car.

Why does Dodge always come up with these amazing looking designs... then 2-3 years later, after you see a million of them on the road, they look like "just another Dodge"?
