Challenge: find a budget sports car

GasX

Lifer
You have a budget of $6000
Must be less than 10 years old

Other factors to consider:
cost to maintain and insure

What car would you get?

Post links

An older Mitsubishi Eclipse w/ AWD and a Turbo? Bump the boost and be over 300 HP.

You could probably fit into a '94 or 95' in that price range.

brute power...Mustang GT
Style and quick...Eclipse Turbos as stated above
quick but not that quick: Probe GT (I have one..not bad modded)

Eclipse GSX's are hard to find, & they're quite expensive. A 1994 with 72,000 miles has a KBB trade-in value of $6,200. Retail they're more. The 2nd generation body style kicks the price up quite a bit, too.

However...

If you can increase your budget, that would be a good choice. Do set aside some money to replace the transmission, though.

Viper GTS

1993 Mustang LX 5.0

Get the notchback (not hatchback) as they are much stiffer in the body, and when it comes to upgrading it to Porsche-like performance/handling, that is important 🙂

imo, those are the fugliest mustangs ever designed.

<< just go get a 85-87 corevette and save $1-2k

that will be faster than anything else you can get for the skrills

Not too familiar with those Eclipses are you? I don't know if they'll dust a Vette in a quarter, but they will surely prove to be a much better ride.

How is that less than 10 years old?

If I was doing this for real, I'd put $2000 into my 67 mustang and smoke everyone...

tuffguy, maybe fugly but will spank the pants off of most anything else in the price range.

also, cheap as anything to modify as there are tons of aftermarket parts.

and lastly they don't have the ghetto ass interior of the camaro or any other GM product.

I got tons compliments on my 90 Fox body Saleen, and I would have traded it for a notchback LX with a vortech in a second, simply one of the best cheap musclecars ever made.

If I were you and had a budget of 6k I would get either a notch or a hatch LX ($4000) if you get a good deal) and add in the future:

2.5 in Flowmaster Exhaust with stainless tips ($200)

Bassani X pipe with High Flow cats ($700) (or do like I did and just get a hollowed out X pipe non cat model for 500 less, but then your breakin the law)

Pro 5.0 Shirt Throw shifter ($200)

Eibach Pro Spring kit ($236)

Polyurethane sway bar mounts and links ($50 for all approx)

Camber Caster plates ($200)

Sub frame connectors ($70)

Strut Tower Brace ($100)

G-load Brace ($100)

and if they are bad some new shocks

355 rear end gears with new clutch packs ($200)
373's if you opt for an auto

and a nice K&N conical filter ........

After that you will have a nice respectable street touring car with alot of low end torque

This will just get you started,

Later you can add things like:

edelbrock ported high flow heads ($1200)

GT 40 or Cobra Intake ($500 or $350 depending on which you choose)

High perf cam with install ($200?)

after that you will have one nasty machine with lots of low end torque

and the beauty of it is there are hundreds of more tasteful modifications you can make later, from rims and tires to a saleen body kit for a different appearance.

My mustang was the best car that I ever owned, and if I had the oppertunity again I wouldnt think twice of buying another, they are just too much fun--and what is even more fun is seeing those silly ricers in your rear view 🙂

for got to add you can find alot of that stuff at great discount if you buy slightly used, some stuff you should get new like exhaust as that can be unique to each car (if you have ever installed exhaust systems you can understand where I am comming from)

but alot of that stuff you can get a good discount.

Tuffguy good luck getting and eclipse to hang with a supra or viper for under 10g's.

I have been searching the net, but for $6000 you can't get a good Special Service Mustang. I would JUMP on one of those.

1984 Chevrolet Corvette 6.7 15.1
1985 Chevrolet Corvette 5.7 14.1
1986 Chevrolet Corvette 5.8 14.4

1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 6.9 15.2
1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 7.0 15.3
1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 6.8 15.2
1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 6.4 14.9

Not a huge difference actually. Nothing that a new ECU on the GSX can't fix 😉

i still think that it's ugly. and if it didn't have such a powerful engine in it i doubt that enyone would buy it. american engineering - make it ok looking, throw a bigass engine in there and make it cheap. why waste your time on actually making the engine run better when you could just just stick a bigger engine in there.

the eclipse gsx will also give you MUCH better handling. power is useless unless you can make it stick. launched properly, the gsx can take anything off the line.

to convert an eclipse gsx into a viper/supra killer, the total cost should be $20-25k.

Actually, I'm just posting info and specs, I'm not making any calls. I'd prefer a GSX myself.

How old do you have to go with RX-7s to get under $6k?

I would go with the mustang myself and I like the notchback. I think they look cleaner.
