There was a little more info on this posted in the Pentahtlon shoutbox on May 3rd.

@pschoefer, assuming WCG backend performance is the same or better than it is during the Pent, will WCG birthday challenge be revived? Thx.

I am not really capable of thinking more than ~16 days ahead right now, and I will definitely not decide this alone 😊
that said, there was an effort to revive it last year, and the main reason why it did not happen was resolved in the meantime

As far as I understand, there are two problems with WCG MCM in the currently ongoing Pentathlon Marathon:

• Fast hosts/ wide hosts have difficulties to receive new work quickly enough. Can be worked around with multiple BOINC client instances.
• Last Saturday, the server stopped generating new workunits. AFAIK this lasted about a day but was rectified still well before the next regular workday.

Another problem may arise theoretically: The project developers might implement a GPU-accelerated application for MCM. However, if this gets through at all, maybe it won't go live until November inclusive. (Last news on this subject which I am aware of: Jurisica Lab's MCM page -> Operational Status -> December 20, 2024) PPD difference between CPU and GPU version and/or work availability could become a problem for a contest then.

PS, according to the Pentathlon shoutbox, WCG stopped generating MCM work again today ( = Saturday, but much earlier than last weekend). I don't know if this info is correct and whether or not it has been fixed by Krembil yet. Also, it was claimed in the shoutbox that this is rather common to happen at WCG on weekends.
