CHALLENGE - build me a car pc, that will be used for weather research, entertainment

I am gearing up to provide weather research for the National Weather Service via Skywarn and I will be putting a weather station in my vehicle. I have to put a pc in there to record the data. It doesn't have to be a speed demon, obviously hardcore gaming won't be going on. But I would like DVD, MP3 ability. Onboard video and audio are fine, but I don't want it to be a total wimp. Suggestions? I would need TV out because I would be using a small 6-7inch LCD for the screen. They can be had for like 100-150 bucks on the net...
Anyway I'm gonna go look around newegg and the such...

Dang, just did a search on pricegrabber, they got some decent systems for cheap. They got an HP 2.6Ghz Celeron DVD, CDrw for 349bucks.... Still looking...

It's a Celeron... That's not cheap. You can build a system like the one you just listed for under 300 dollars off of newegg.

yeah, I'm looking at newegg right now. Try to decide whether to go P4 or AMD....Probably going to need MASSIVE/POWERFUL heatsink and fan combo... any suggestions there? The PC will most likely be in the trunk. In the summer it will be hot in there, though I do plan on creating a "duct" that will be connected to the PC and will draw air in from the passenger compartment...

I also am think of simply putting my current config in there and build a new home system 😉

I would just have to de-overclock the cpu and video card. But I also need to worry about power draw. I was thinking of going with a mini -itx system but I am a little leery of those. No upgradability...

Buy a Xbox w/ remote and a mod chip and load windows on it. It should be the cheapest/smallest with full package.

Good Idea 😀 but would rather in stall Linux 😀

^^ agree

Back on topic, I would rather have a laptop. You don't have to deal w/ all the power cable...crap. And u should be able to get a new laptop for around $700US if you look around. Or used for even cheaper.

See my sig.

No offence to people here, but most of them have no idea when it comes to putting a PC in the car.

My advice: Do it right, first time. If it's being used for GPS, get a VGA monitor, such as a Lilliput. For MB, go with something like a Via Epia M10000, and for power supply there really is only one that is any good, the Opus. The screen and power supply may seem expensive, but I can almost guarantee that you won't be disappointed if you get them, but you might be if you spend money on something else.

Confused
