Chalk another one up for concealed carry permit..

ABC12's Marc Jacobson says an unidentified gunman began shooting through the glass in the front of the Palace Poker Room in the 1100 block of Bristol Road at around 1 this morning.

A witness says the masked man, armed with a shotgun, shot out the front door of the building, walked in and fired at least one round into the ceiling.

The gunman told the 30-60 people inside to hit the floor.

More rounds were fired before a retired police officer, who was armed, shot and killed the gunman.

Police believe the gunman could be the same person who robbed the poker room last month.

No other injuries have been reported.

I would assume that would include a poker room.

Ohio is pretty strict. Of course, we just got ours 3 years ago.

You can't carry on government property (courthouse, post office, schools, etc.).
Nor can you carry anywhere alcohol is served, or if you have consumed any amount of alcohol. You do not have to be over .08%, .01% is enough to get you a felony.

Well, this isn't necessarily a victory for CCW. A normal CCW permit holder would have been banned from carrying in a poker room or casino. Retired cops have no such restrictions.

A shame, too. Gun free zones are the most likely targets for criminals and mass shootings. They are an invitation (not prevention) for crime.

Exactly. Is it any coincidence that most mass shootings occur in so called "gun free zones". The people doing the shooting know that there won't be anyone there to oppose them.

Wholeheartedly agree. "No guns in banks" well yeah like the bad guys are going to pay attention to those signs.

They tend to be banks and whatnot too...where a robber is likely to rob.

Where did you get this fact of no restrictions. I've never heard such a thing.

Though it depends on the state as far as the poker room/casino go.

We now have a gun free zone in our down town area...even if you are just passing through.

I know those criminals are going to be taking this very seriously, maybe even turning their guns into the nearest constable they run into.

They always follow the letter of the law.

Hehe, yay for Alabama, only gun-free zones are federally protected ones and "public demonstrations." Everywhere else is free-game and the state constitution pre-empts any municipality from making further restrictions as well

Where did you get this fact of no restrictions. I've never heard such a thing.

CCW is prohibited in casinos in Michigan, and yet the retired cop was not charged.

I wonder why?

Michigan law might allow for retired peace officers to carry.

Pistol free zones do not apply to any of the following:
A licensee who is a retired police officer or retired law enforcement officer. The concealed weapon licensing board may require a letter from the law enforcement agency stating that the retired police officer or law enforcement officer retired in good standing.

That's pretty sad that one of the patrons had to defend the poker room from a robbery. I would expect any poker room with 30-60 players to have tighter security than that.

This is in Michigan. Poker rooms in Michigan are for charitable gaming only. Michigan typically doesn't license owners of these plav=ces for alchohol. I used to work in the Charitable gaming industry and of all the poker rooms and bingo halls i went to in Michigan I only saw one that had a beer and wine license. It only had it because the license came with the property so it was grandfathered.

That place is just 3 miles down the road from my office. Must be new in the last 2 years. Most of these places usually keep a retired or off duty cop on the payroll for just this reason.
