I currently have 2x512 dual setup on my mothboard.

I was wondering if it is possible to add 2gb of 1gb memory sticks to the remaing two mem slots.
Would this work?

I mean, can I have 3 gigs of memorying working in dual channel on my Chaintech VNF4 Ultra motherboard?

The reason I ask this is because the manual says if i added 4 gigs of mem to my motherboard it would only read it as 3.5gb, if i remember correctly.

first thing to notice, it that you must have equal amount of memory on both channels. not 512+512 on one and 1G+1G on another. This way, you'll end up having just 2G ram. The right combination is 512+1G on both.

second: you must note single and dualsided memory. odd number of memory sides means you have less memory, thats why you had 3.5 istead of 4G.

third: Athlon 64 mem controller is quite picky, and I'm pretty sure, it will either choke at suck amount of memory or/and decrease speed automatically

forth: less "sides" the better (easier) for memory controller. I heard that almost all Nforce motherboards for A64 (NF3, Nf4) does not like all slots filled with dualsided memory. Sometimes it wont even work (Epox 8KDA3 series for example).

So you're saying it's best for me to forget about my 2x512 memory and stick in 2x1gig memory?

ahhhhh....this sucks

Basically im trying to get 2gigs of memory to get the best performance for Battlefield 2.

Thanks for the imput

on the VNF4Ultra, 4x512 will automatically default to single-channel mode, 2T command rate and DDR333.

you are better off going 2x1GB, and make absolutely positive they are in the same-colored slots on this board. and keep your dual-channel/1T/DDR400 setup as it is:)

Umm, 4x512 works fine on this board.

The only thing is it wont work at 1T. It will do DDR400 fine as well (assuming a venice core, and some winchesters can do it).

It's still dual channel though.

oops, my bad

meant to say with 2x512 +2x1GB arrangement Preti9cboi was asking aboutj, not 4x512 which is one of the few recommended RAM arrangements on the board, lol

that won't run dual-channel or 1T and I'm fairly sure the Winnies mem controller would knock it down to DDR333

ooo okay thanks. I think i'll just buy me some 2x512 sticks then.

What do you guys do to tell if it's running at DDR 400 or if it got bumped down to DDR300?

it would only run DDR333 if you are running a weird RAM configuration, absolutely will not happen with 2x512 or 2x1gb in the recommended slots

What do you mean a weird RAM configuration? I'm going to have 4x512 sticks of all the same brand.

It might work dd400/1T/dual, if your 512MB memsticks are all single sided.
if your 512mb memory sticks are dualsided (or at least one of them), then 100% it will go down to DDR333 and 2T. Though I'm not quite sure about single-channel, haven't tried that..

I am interested in also upgrading to 2GB (4x512 - currently I have 2x512 Corsair XMS C2). I have two questions:
1) Does the CAS automatically go to 2.5 with four modules?
2) If so, can you just use Value Select modules for the other two which have 2.5 CAS and save me $30?

Besides Battlefield loads/hitching it should also help with FEAR (at least the great demo for now)

Thanks!
