I believe newer chip cards are due out at the end of '05, so you might spend a ton of cash and still be lagging in performance behind the latest, greatest video tech that just a single card might provide.

Just a thought.

I finally got all the parts last night and threw mine together. My obsession is with quiet computing rather than overclocking so I won't be reporting how far it will go. I just don't care. What I do care about is that my new Athlon64 3200+ PC is running almost silently. And very cool as well - with only one exremely-low RPM case fan, a low RPM PSU, and a Tt SilentBoost HSF, it idles at 37 degrees. I haven't gotten a chance to do any benchmarking yet as I should have been sleeping last night when I was installing Windows, but so far it's been perfectly stable and has 'felt' a lot faster than my AthlonXP 2500+. One thing that surprised me - It boots faster than anything I've ever seen. I didn't realize that was something that would be improving so much. Anyhow, more info to follow today or tomorrow, though I'll probably post it in the mobo section rather than on this thread.

Actually I'm also more concerned with quiet operation. I want something quieter than what I have. So this is good news for me thanks for posting it.

I'm building a silent rig, too. Is anyone going to watercool their board? If so, which chipset waterblock works best with the NF4? I've got the ASUS SLI board on order, and I'm planning to get the Swiftech CPU waterblock (the one used in the H20-120 kit)

Don't you get it already, this board does not overclock well. I don't get why you keep harping on this dead end, can't you wait a few days till something better is available ?

I dunno, I dunno if PCI E locking is something to worry about or not. Does anyone even have PCI-E x1 cards? heh.

Mine is scheduled to arrive on Monday:)

The guy who said it wouldn't o/c past 220 now says he has it up to 250 by lowering his HT multi to x4. Just goes to show until a reputable site does a review on it it's not safe to jump on either side of the chaintech bandwagon. Lots of people say lots of crazy things on these boards and you may not really know what you are recycling.

The guy could do some booger -eatin moron like myself and you could be lowering the IQ of everyone here at anandtech by spewing forth untrue claims. I mean hell maybe it does suck but we really dont know as of yet.

btw, like I told you before SLI is a software feature implemented at the graphics driver level. The only thing the chipset needs to "support" is two x8 pci-e channels. If you don't believe it, you can see it used in xeon systems with intel chipsets which support dual x8 pci-e. nd the sli connector is again just an optimization, as it is possible to implement parallel graphics processing without it, just by communicating normally using the pci-e bus. But when using the proprietary card-to-card connector, it is possible to use dual GPUs, even without dual x8 pci-e channels, like the motherboard DFI is expected to release. Actually, there is not even a need for two pci0e channels, you could implement dual GPU solution on a single card (e.g. gigabyte).

So relax, think about it, and don't get caught in the hype. In the meantime you could read this

so, whats the deal with having only 3 pci slots...is this going to be the norm from now on?

It has 2 or 3 1x Pci-x slots as well. Its going to be like those really old mobos with some ISA and some PCI during the transition period. In a couple years you'll see only PCI-X slots and no more PCI. Besides with everything built in what would you put there? It has 10 freaking USB slots. If you are into firewire and tons of SATA drives, check out that gigabyte nforce4 motherboard it has a couple firewire and EIGHT sata plugs. The only thing I can see adding maybe, is soundcard. A TV card maybe. Thats only 2.

If you have money flowing out your ears you might go SCSI instead of raptor SATA I suppose. But you'd be buying a PCI-X SCSI card I'd think if you had that much money, not PCI.

That solution is cheaper than an SLI board and 2 6600GT cards right now which is the main advantage. (Figure $200 for each 6600GT and $250 for a SLI board and 2 cards +mobo will run you $650 instead of gigabytes estimated $550 for thier bundle of thier 3d1 card and mobo). However, I've seen no retail reviews of the gigabyte motherboard and that video card requires the gigabyte motherboard to work. You've been filling this thread with cries of WAIT FOR REVIEWS, so why are you advocating this? lol
