I guess I was looking at CPU usage and quality of output when referring to the 7.1 system. I will mostly be using headphones and a 2.1 setup...just looking at a quality/performance perk for 23 bucks...what do you think?

In 7.1, the two 'surrounds' go on the sides and the extra two are rear channels. So 2 front, 1 center, 2 side/surround and 2 rear (and of course a subwoofer). In my opinion, anything beyond quad w/ a subwoofer is overkill. Except for movies the center channel seems to make things worse not better and placing 7 speakers is kinda nutty to even try anywhere besides a cubicle. I put my little Logitechs up on the ceiling in my 1/2 finished basement and that helps deal with cords. Everywhere else besides my big stereo in the livingroom, it's ludicrous to try and run that many wires.

I was going to pick up one of those sticks of Kingston 4000 Hyper whatever that Best Buy has on sale but now it looks like I'm tracking down another video card. What other vid cards are folks using with this board. Anyone tried the new Linux kernal with this board?

Are you talking about Mandrake10?
I've considered it.
I also have the 64-bit WinXP trial version. I just can't decide which one to try first...😱

I'm still trying to determine if the current release of Mandrake 10 includes the 64 bit version. Their release schedule almost makes it sound like there will be another version of 10 specifically for 64 bit CPUs. I have to last ISOs downloaded plan on burning 'em tonight.

edit
Yeah, it looks like a different release altogether... looks like I'm back to bittorrent if I can find it out there!
Mandrake 10 for AMD 64

Re-edit!
And that takes me to the store where it says 'Pre-order'

Well, I have the board installed and so far so good. Winxp Pro picked up my new SATA raptor without having to install drivers, and I played about 10 minutes of FarCry no problem. Installed a few of my applications. No errors in my event logs.

One thing that I did notice was the CPU temp being way too low. I know there is a bios update, but Chaintech's site is so slow I can't download it.

My board just die after 1 week . RMA back to newegg
This boards don't like kingston (bh-6) double side . I have 1 stick 512 not o/c at all . but run great with 2 256m kingston (bh-6) single side at 225mhz fsb

No, there's no multi adjust in the new BIOS either. I'm keeping fingers crossed this happens with the "next" BIOS....(please! !)
😉

To update...I've just dropped in two sticks of HyperX 3500. Man, this thing is REALLY kicking now.

Gortok how fast ya runnin her?

How bout the temperature issues guys? Did it solve that?

BTW I am 4 hour prime 95 stable at 240 fsb with the ram running 206 (166 mode) so 2.4 gig is pretty smokin with a gig of ram. I don't know how much faster the 939's are gonna be but this ROCKS.

I read somewhere that this update did fix that issue.

I haven't had too much spare time lately so I am afraid I haven't been able to play with my VNF3-250 much.

What kinda temps you guys getting? I am curious because I don't want to puch my chip too far...

Schnieds

Been at 225 for a day now...(at 100% folding load)... 'bout to bump her up to 230 and see what happens.
The HyperX won't run 225 in my NF7-S v2, but it's very good with the Chaintech. I found also that the Kingston Value stuff I did the review with won't run any where close to 218 (sync) on the Abit board. I had to set it to 200...SPD to make it work the 2500+Barton at 3200+
So, wish me luck...I'll let you guys know where I top it out....
😀

Well 229/sync was looking pretty good but it's only stable through about half of SuperPi 8MB test...
Back to 228... EDIT: 226 was final stable sync FSB
Next, I'll try async ... That should be interesting...

G

232 async...This is NOT impressive. This has to do with the RAM obviously. Looks like I'll be putting the HyperX back in the NF7-S and the Kingston Value stuff back in here...oh well.
I suppose my NEXT upgrade will have to be some GREAT ram...

I am assuming when you say Async meaning out of sync and running under or near rated speed of ram after increasing fsb.

That is indicative of maxing out your CPU. Of course I would need more information to say for sure...but I think it would be the most plausable of scenarios. I found that changing HT from 4 to 3 is unnecessary, but messed around with a LOT of the settings running Async. The A64 is a strange CPU in that I can run Prime95 4 different times with 4 different results. If I get 4-6 hours on average without errors...good enough. It also happens with quite a few mobile XP's...no matter what you do you will still get an error from time to time...strange.
