Chaintech Geforce2 mx 400 resolution problem in XP

Trying to get 1024x768 output to an Proview PT500 LCD monitor using XP OS. When I set to 1024x768 resolution the monitor just fades to black then some funky colors. Set to 800 x 600 it displays OK but the quality sucks. I know the monitor works at 1024 x 768 because I've had working on another computer with Win98 and a voodoo 2-3000 card.
The difference appears to be that I could set the colors down to 16 or 256 with the voodoo card but with the Chaintech the only selections are 16bit and 32bit and both of those cause the monitor to crap out at 1024x768. I even installed some Proview drivers...and played with the refresh rate and that didn't help.

The question is...is there a way to ad lower color settings like 16 colors, 256 colors, 8 bit etc. to the selections available in the displays settings?

Otherwise I guess I can can the monitor or maybe pt in a lesser video card or is it XP?

Thanks, Mac
