I still can't figure out how those cards keep getting abysmal scores on FEAR. My o/ced 7600gt averages 30fps at 1280x1024 with max settings. Maybe the difference was my o/c-ed pci-e bus?

yeah but if you look at the game test in the article, there is quite a different picture painted

Yeah, theres a pretty big difference, but the 8600gts keeps up alot better than I expected.

Pretty sure G80 doesn't perform well in FEAR across the board. Even though the 8800 GTS and GTX outperformed the competition in FEAR the performance delta was much closer in FEAR than in other games.

Still, nice link, will be interesting to see how these cards stack up with the mid-range enthusiast crowd. People who are willing to OC to get the most bang for their buck but don't want to spend a lot of money.

It only keeps up with a X1950pro in ACTUAL games as shown in the Anandtech review...and here in Canada at least, the X1950 costs about $100 less than the 8600GTS.

I read some 8600gt benchmarks from recent reviews, this card runs fast on 3dmarks but much slower than 3dmark indicates when comes to actual games. It's much slower in real games I think it's like 70-80% of 7900gs in many games. COnsider x1950pro is faster than 7900gs, this makes 8600gt not truely worth the 150+ price tag they carry. Although they are much faster in HDMI decoding than 79xx or x1950pro cards, so if you do high def stuff this card might be worht it but definitely not worth it for gamers.

The 8600GTS does well in newer games like Oblivion and only costs $189.

If you ask me this is a swift kick to the nuts of AMD's "launch the whole line" plan.

Right now NVIDIA is starting to take all of the mid-range money with no one to stop them.

Come on AMD, loosen the bra strap and put out already!

A 5800u was also getting high 3dmark scores until the real picture became clear. Actual game performance is what matters, I don't even read 3dmark numbers in reviews anymore.
