CGW botches FEAR review!

Case in point: The game autodetects medium settings on a GeForce 7800GTX-powered PC, while autodetecting maximum settings on another machine with the same specs and ATIs older Radeon 9800XT. What would be interesting is if they're actually goofy enough to think the 9800XT "works" better than a 7800GTX, or they just think the failure of auto-detection is a big deal. Very strange.

FEAR's autodetection also thinks my old P4-3.06 (533FSB) was faster than my new AMD64 3500+ ... it went from autodetecting "High" CPU settings to "Medium" after I changed CPUs. It probably just looks at raw clock speed and calls it a day.

Of course, actual game performance has improved (albeit slightly -- my video card is the real bottleneck).

But that reviewer is smoking crack if he thinks a flaky autodetection algorithm is high on the "must-patch" list. It's not like you can't just change the settings yourself.

FEAR only checks clockspeeds of the CPUs, and the AMDs are clocked lower, so it thinks its not as good...

this is no big deal, and does not suggest CGW is in the wrong for making the comment
its a minor bug
its not like they docked it, and CGW knows its not true that the game plays better on the 9800, they said the autodetection settings were bad. And for some people, that could cause issues.

magazines are always inept. CGW is actually the best pc gaming mag I've ever read.

Rollo has certainly got his money's worth out of this month's CGW, with at least two well responded to topics coming from it. I will give you this Rollo: even though both articles call attention to nVidia being better than ATI, you aren't being a pure fanboy. IMHO I now care less about CGW bashing the X1300 since apparently a very minor glitch is worthy of a high priority patch job according to them.

Also - no Rollo, I don't expect you to care about my opinions regarding your posts, and no I don't expect anyone else to care if I consider you a "fanboy", and no to whatever other qualifying statements are necessary to not get yelled at by you these days. I should probably apologize in advance for this paragraph as well.

You must have missed my recent post in the X1800XL AIW vs 6800GS SLI+ tv tuner thread today where I said there was no reason to consider the SLI.
