Here is some "impact effects" thing I saw posted on the slashdot thread about that meteorite that hit Norway a few days ago.

When I was playing with it at the time I got the effect of "100% of earth melted," I thought to myself hmmm.

Now I now sort of what it would look like.

It's not accurate. There would be much more damage than shown for an object of that size.

They left out the part where Captain Planet and the Planeteers convince the asteroid to detour around mercury.
