CF reader speads

I currently have a Kingston PC Card II(PCMCIA) CF reader. I can't find a speed of this device, but notice it takes a long time to copy pictures from the card to my harddrive.

I am thinking of getting a CF thumb drive reader (USB 2.0).

Do you think I will see an improvement in speeds.

I have the Lexar Professional 1 GB CF card.

It is certainly possible, particularly if some element of the CF card - PCMCIA reader - PCMCIA chipset chain is running in one of the older PCMCIA modes. I wouldn't, however, bet on it. If you were upgrading from a scungy old USB 1.1 reader you would be effectively certain to see better speeds. PCMCIA CF readers, to the best of my knowledge, make CF cards look like PCMCIA harddrives, something that their circuitry is natively capable of. Thus, barring some sort of engineering oddity, you should be seeing something pretty close to real world native performance of the card right now.

i think there are differences. i can't remember which but it might be sandisk? out with a new fast reader...
and of course there are different speeds of flash memory, some very fast, some slow. i think some camera sites like dpreview.com have had benchmarks.. i know other sites and magazines have tested these too but i don't remember em since i've never had a use for high speed mem
