CF Raid

So, 16GB 233x+ CF cards can be found for around $30 right now. That means you could get 128GB of storage for around $240. How would the performance stack up with current SSDs in a raid 0 format?

Also of note, is that a MicroSD to CF adapter is available that can house 4 MicroSD cards, those go for $15/ 8GB so while the price remains the same, I think it's possible that performance could be increased further if those were then raided together.

CF cards have horrible performance. Not to mention, they're IDE and not SATA, so you probably won't be RAIDing very many.

CF cards have no write cache and generally aren't optimized for random writes.

Some controllers have cache and raid. But they are expensive and it's probably just cheaper now to get a SSD.

this, I thought about the same thing a while back and in my tests using two 4gb cards, the performance was still horrible at best.

CF 300x SLC cards are about $150 for 16GB. I don't think it'll stand a chance against a OCZ Vertex or Intel SSD. From what I remember from my benchmarks, my 300x 8GB CF only did about 40MB/s. Also you have to factor in the cost of the raid controller for CF cards...

I guess it could be a good idea for a cheap slow HD for something like a HTPC. Get a 32GB card and a cheaper raid-less controller.

You'd have to get lots of RAM for less caching, but the CF drive would be silent.
