What can you do when a CF card you inserted say require formatting ?

I had this happen to one of my lexar but I had to send it back for firmware re-flashing

Now it happens to one of my friends 256mb... we rather save whats on it but do you guys think Norton Disk Doctor or some other disc utility can help recover some stuff...

Any idea or suggestions.. thanks

Inserted into what? Camera? Computer? PDA? MP3 Player?

A good check is to put it back in the device that created the files. In the case of digital film, back in the camera. Then see if the camera recognizes any of the contents. Sometimes media readers attached to computers can corrupt media because of Windows . . . like placing a recycle bin on it.

The best place to reformat is in the device it is used it and by that device. Windows can reformat the media, but it does not always get the required data folders installed that the using device requires.

It was used in an Ipaq

but i think the kid either drop it or crush it.. usually the ipaq format is same as pc so u can stick it in a pc/ipaq/usb reader or camera w/o problems..

at least I have no problem doing that in my flash cards..

I used ipaq + canon s110 + kingston usb reader..

flash card is viking 256mb.

That kinda sux when windows start throwing recycle bin in each device..

I remember that was a small problem with dual boot systems, the recycle bin gets errors...

Bummer! CFs are hollow because they do have micro-circuitry inside. They do not take well to being stepped on or run over.

Yes . . . the iPaq and PC should be on the same sheet of music. I would say that the odds are now that whatever was on it is not recoverable. To see if the CF is totally wasted, put it in the S-110 and see if the camera will format it. If not . . . :) Adios CF!
