Cessna lands on NJ Turnpike

I actually didn't really think this was threadworthy, but for the quotes by the Turnpike Authority spokesman:

"This was pretty much a non-incident in terms of what the outcome was like," said New Jersey Turnpike Authority spokesman Joseph Orlando. "The plane landed, he taxied it over into the shoulder. We can't even get motorists to do that when they break down."

Authorities haven't identified the pilot or passenger, but have said that neither was injured.

There was a traffic backup of about a mile and a half in each direction. Mr. Orlando said that was due mostly to rubbernecking.

"For the first time in 8 years, I can probably say you had a good reason to stop and look," Mr. Orlando said.

I have to wonder how the heck he landed, the turnpike traffic is always dense as hell.
 
Almost positive that a Cessna 152 would be able to slow down to highway speeds (or slower) in a controlled, stall-free descent onto a straight landing site... so as long as the traffic wasn't bumper to bumper, he just needs a little stretch free of traffic to lay the plane down and then get onto the shoulder.

And free of power lines, overpasses, and street lights.

Edit-The recommended landing approach speed with flaps for the Cessna 150-152 is 60-70 MPH

Somebody once told me that the highway system purposefully has long/flat stretches that are designed to double as runways if need be. This was done on purpose and the routes choosen to accommodate it.

Is this true?
 
I hate that airport. I try to avoid Newark and Chicago if at all possible whenever I fly.

I love Newark. Easiest Airport to get to in the area with NJTransit having various trains that stop at the airport train station numerous times a day.

JFK is a bitch. Belt Pkwy is always backed up

You'd be surprised, really. The landing speed on a Cessna 152 is pretty close to freeway speed. As long as you're going with traffic, it's really not much different than a lane change. People will usually see you coming down and make space for you to merge.

Nope, I've never done it, but part of flight training is learning where to land if the engine quits.

I could see it being viable but guess snopes says no and for good reasons I guess.

If they did, they could probably use those big LCD signs to tell everyone to GTFO due to emergency. Or maybe they just have "Aircraft have the right of way" signs. :biggrin:
