A. What is "Certified Angus" and is it good?
B. Is 4 bucks per pound a good price in Southern California?

I'm a steak noob (raised hindu) so apologies for dumbass questions. This'll probably be my first DECENT steak. I've had shameful crap in the past I don't wish to talk about. :(

angus just pretty much makes the best steaks...
so who cares about A and B.. you're getting one helluva meal
but B is a really good deal, if you are gonna get a steak at black angus, it's probably going to cost in the neighborhood of $15 per pound.

Where is this $4/lb steak? Ribeye usually runs about $4.99/lb at Ralphs.

Ribeye is excellent. Rib, lion, and sirlon are always good choices in tender steaks, best for the grill. Round, shoulder/chuck, brisket are a bit tougher, better for slow cook methods.

If I may ask: Since you were raised with hindu beliefs, what made you want to try steak?

My parents weren't too strict on no beef as a child, they just never went out of their way to aquire it (i.e. they would never buy beef products, but they don't really mind munching down a roast if they are served it at a party or something. My mom doesn't really like red meat mainly because she thinks it's bad for you or something.) My personal spirtual believes don't adhere strictly to any set religion, and eating beef doesn't really matter to me. I am *really* into food, a foodie I guess, so eliminating a HUGE part of the meat group doesn't really make sense to me.
My parents actually had some new york strip steak a long while back. My mother would absolutely smother it in dried herbs and cook it to well done. It's disgusting to me now as I think back to the culinary sins my parents commited with those steaks. I don't think they've ever had a good steak.
The only steak I can remember eating besides those nasty chewy bastardized new york strips was a T-bone at ihop cooked to medium rare. It was really good, so I'm really excited to think of what this rib eye will taste like. :-D It's fun being a foodie.

$4/lb of steak = steak that's been in the freezer for 3 years.. I used to eat those.. there was this small meatstore that sells expired restaurant meat for cheap. They were all packed like 3 years ago, but they have been frozen the whole time, so it's still good :)

*shudder* ;)

I was just curious.. most of the people I know who are hindu tend to adhere to their beliefs. However, there's this one guy at work (who is visiting from Bangalore until the end of this week) who's philosophy is that if it moves or once moved, he's going to have it for lunch.

My favorite steak is a good, thick, medium-well filet mignon.

You know, I'm probably going to have to smuggle this steak into the house and eat it when my parents aren't home...muahahahaha that just seems so funny to me.

There was a 9-day-long hindu event that usually involved going vegetarian, and my parents made me this time. Last day is tuesday (today) so I plan on having a meat frenzy tomorrow. win.

Since we are on the subject of Steak, what is the best way to grill a steak? What ingredients do you put on your steak for grilling?

S&P
For my first foray into steak land, I plan on keeping it pure. Cooking it to rare, not one minute longer.

i dont know about the best way...but i toss my steak (about 3/4" thick) straight onto a gas grill... medium heat, 7 minutes per side... no nothing (sometimes i slap on steak sauce on one side)... comes out PERFECT and tastes damn good. the usda cert+ angus steaks cook alot better

then i put on some butter, pinch of salt & pepper and gnaw away

I have been grilling my steaks plain. I thought there might be a better way.

Where in So Cal can you get Angus Certified steak for $4 per pound. I have been buying my steaks from Costco and their price ranges from $5.99 to $7.99 per pound?

They got some cheap T-bone or porterhouse steak at ralphs on friday and saturday for 2.99/lb. Unsure of the grade, but it should be decent.

EDIT: Ad says USDA Select Calfornia Beef.

WTF? i just paid $9/lb (CDN, still works out to about 6USD) for a T-bone steak up here in Canada, and supposedly our prices are still a bit cheaper due to the mad cow scare.

If i could get it for $3/lb, i would literally have steaks 5x a week

Select's not that bad, it's the third highest grade of beef.
